‘Person Of Interest’ Detained In LA Car Arson Case

January 2, 2012

LOS ANGELES — Twelve more suspected arson fires broke out early Monday in the Los Angeles area, and a “person of interest” was taken into custody for questioning in connection with the dozens of suspicious car fires that have hit the city since last week. The developments came a day after police distributed DVDs featuring footage of a man, between 20 and 30 years old with a receding hairline and a shoulder-length ponytail, whom they described as a person of interest. He was seen on grainy surveillance video Saturday after emerging on foot from inside an underground parking structure on Hollywood Boulevard where a car fire was reported. Fire department spokesman Capt. Jaime Moore said he couldn’t say whether the person of interest detained early Monday was the man seen on the video footage. “It’s still too early to say whether or not this person has any direct correlation with the number of fires that we’ve been responding to this evening,” Moore said. No arrests had been made. Early Monday, firefighters battled 12 suspected arson fires at carports and garages. Ten occurred in Los Angeles and two were in West Hollywood, Moore said. They broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. Moore said authorities believe the latest fires were connected to the earlier ones. The number of suspicious fires now stands at 55, he said. Detectives spent Sunday analyzing security video camera footage and following up on other leads after a half dozen more vehicles were set on fire on New Year’s Eve. The outbreak of arson fires has left a trail of smoldering debris in Hollywood, West Hollywood, North Hollywood and the Fairfax district of Los Angeles since Thursday. Most of those fires were set in parked cars. In several cases, flames have jumped to carports and apartment units. A reward of $60,000 has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist. Detectives served a search warrant at a home in the San Fernando Valley, Det. Gus Villanueva said Sunday. Several interviews were conducted, but no arrests were made. “They are working on hundreds of clues, interviewing dozens of witnesses, picking up countless pieces of evidence,” police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said of the detectives. Authorities haven’t said how the car fires were sparked or what was collected at the crime scenes. They were unsure if the rash of fires were the work of one arsonist or multiple people or copycats. There have been no injuries. Extra patrols were out in force on New Year’s Eve. One of Saturday’s attacks occurred at the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex, a popular tourist destination and hotspot for holiday revelers. Firefighters responded to a report of a small car fire in a parking structure that was out by the time they arrived. Firefighters routinely are called to put out burning cars, but this recent spate has been unusual because of the frequency and location of the fires. Crews have been responding to other emergencies despite the focus on solving the fire arsons, fire spokesman Erik Scott said. Police urged residents to check their cars for any signs of tampering and take simple precautions such as locking their cars, keeping garage and carport lights on at night and reporting suspicious activity. “We are not going to rest,” Los Angeles Fire Department assistant chief Pat Butler said Sunday at a joint police-fire news conference. “We are going to work tirelessly.” Police officials were working with Sheriff’s Department detectives, city and county fire investigators and members of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. 60 Arson Fires Terrorize L.A.

Southern California firefighters battled 12 more arson fires at carports this morning in the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood as police detectives question a person of interest. Authorities suspect that today’s fires could be connected to 48 other terrorizing blazes in L.A. County communities, including: Downtown Hollywood Hollywood Hills West Hollywood Fairfax Los Feliz North Hollywood Sherman Oaks Valley Glen Sun Valley Los Angeles The rash of L.A. area car fire incidents now totals 60 fires, including the blaze that torched the former home of rock star Jim Morrison of The Doors. It is the worst arson fire outbreak since the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. The LAPD, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, the LAFD, the L.A. County Fire Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are all working together on the Los Angeles Metro arson fires cases. A reward of $60,000 has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of arsonists involved in what many are suggesting could be a conspiratorial case of domestic terrorism. Nuggets Save L.A. Trip With Win Over Lakers

January 2, 2012

DENVER — Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points, Ty Lawson had 17 points and 10 assists and the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 99-90 on Sunday night. Nene had 13 points for the Nuggets, who avenged a three-point loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles less than 24 hours earlier. Pau Gasol had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 16 points on 6-of-28 shooting. After a seesaw battle for most of the final period, the Nuggets scored the final 11 points to pull out the win. Gallinari scored two fast-break layups to give Denver a two-point lead with 2:07 left. After Gasol missed a short turnaround jumper, Lawson’s layup gave the Nuggets a 94-90 lead with 1:20 left. Bryant missed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle and Harrington hit a 12-foot jumper to make it 96-90 with 49 seconds left. The Lakers took a 90-88 lead on Bryant’s layup with 2:47 left and didn’t score again. Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Lakers came out strong in the third quarter. Bynum scored seven points in the first four minutes, including a three-point play that tied it at 50-all. Denver didn’t hit its first field goal of the second half until Lawson’s drive gave the Nuggets the lead back with 7:03 left. Gallinari followed with Denver’s first 3-pointer of the game to make it 55-50. Denver’s lead grew to nine late in the third before the Lakers made another run to pull to 72-71 heading into the fourth. Bryant missed his first five shots and committed two offensive fouls before sitting in the final minute of the first quarter. He returned midway through the second, hit a 3-pointer but missed his next four. The Lakers team didn’t fare any better. Los Angeles missed its last 11 shots of the first half and shot just 32 percent at the break. The Nuggets struggled from the field, too, missing all nine of their 3-point shots before the break, but they surged at the end of the second quarter. Leading 39-36, Al Harrington hit four free throws and had a nice interior pass to set up a dunk by Chris Andersen that helped Denver take a 47-36 lead at halftime. NOTES: Denver was 2 for 18 from 3-point range. … The Lakers have played six games in the first eight days of the season, including three in three nights to open the schedule. … Lawson has scored in double figures in four of Denver’s first five games. … Denver came into Sunday second in scoring in the NBA but 24th in 3-point shooting. A New Year Filled with Mystery about Clippers, Lakers

A New Year Filled with Mystery about Clippers, Lakers

With a new year comes the hope of having a clearer perspective in life. Unfortunately the only perspective I have to offer is about sports since that’s what my life revolves around now. Or at least it’s the only perspective I can afford to have, but really no one cares about what I can or can’t afford. Nevertheless the Lakers and Clippers are neither as good nor as bad as previously thought. more › Read the original here: A New Year Filled with Mystery about Clippers, Lakers
