California Welcomes Dell

Dell invaded Silicon Valley today, opening the Texas company’s new California R&D center campus in Santa Clara. Governor Jerry Brown welcomed Michael Dell and company with open arms, but Governor Rick Perry was nowhere to be found. The Dell Silicon Valley Research and Development Center has joined California’s tech community as a job creator adding 742 Californians to Dell’s payroll. Governor Brown warmly greeted Michael Dell on behalf of all Californians: “California is the world capital of innovation and technology, so it’s only natural that Dell has chosen Santa Clara as the home for its newest research and development facility.

Final Witness Against Murray To Testify Today

October 19, 2011

LOS ANGELES — The trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death will resume Wednesday after days of delay, with jurors hearing from a leading expert on the powerful anesthetic that authorities contend killed the King of Pop. Dr. Steven Shafer’s return to the stand on behalf of the prosecution comes after testimony was halted for three and a half court days. Time off was initially given to accommodate the Columbia University professor’s schedule, but his father died and the delay was extended. Shafer is the prosecution’s final witness in its case against Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. A judge canceled testimony Tuesday to give defense attorneys time to research new test results conducted by coroner’s officials on the level of the sedative lorazepam in Jackson’s body. Murray’s attorneys have claimed that lorazepam levels found in the singer’s stomach contents suggested he may have taken several pills in the hours before his death without his doctor’s knowledge. Murray has admitted giving Jackson doses of propofol in the pop superstar’s bedroom as a sleep aid. Murray’s attorneys have said that the amount of propofol their client gave Jackson on the day of his June 2009 death was too small to cause the icon’s sudden death at age 50. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said Monday that the new results from the coroner’s office show that levels of lorazepam in Jackson’s body were lower than the defense claimed and were inconsistent with the theory Murray’s attorneys had presented to jurors. Lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff said Tuesday that he was seeking additional testing from an independent lab to confirm or disprove the coroner’s results, but that it would take several days for the defense to get the answers it needs. Walgren agreed that he would not raise the issue of the new tests until after the defense team presents its case. Murray’s attorneys will begin calling witnesses Friday. They plan to call 15 witnesses, who will include police detectives, character witnesses and Randy Phillips, the head of AEG Live, the promoter of Jackson’s planned series of comeback concerts. Chernoff said many of the witnesses will be brief and the defense should rest its case by Wednesday. Murray’s attorneys are also going to call one of Shafer’s colleagues, Dr. Paul White, as an expert to try to counter the prosecution’s case. Prosecution witnesses have repeatedly faulted Murray for his care of Jackson, noting that his use of propofol as a sleep aid was outside the drug’s intended use. They have also faulted Murray for not calling 911 sooner, for botching resuscitation efforts and for lying to paramedics and emergency room doctors about the drugs he had given Jackson. Two expert witnesses, cardiologist Dr. Alon Steinberg and sleep specialist Dr. Nader Kamangar, testified last week that Murray’s actions were gross deviations from the standard of care. Shafer briefly began his testimony Thursday and explained to jurors how he had crafted the warnings and guidelines included with each bottle of propofol – warnings that Walgren said in opening statements Murray had repeatedly ignored. ___ See the article here: Final Witness Against Murray To Testify Today

Patch Profile: BHUSD Board Candidate Noah Margo

October 19, 2011

Beverly Vista parent Noah Margo is trying to make history as being only the second write-in candidate to win a Beverly Hills election in recent memory. Margo joined the Nov. 8 race for one of three seats on the Board of Education after Traffic and Parking Commissioner Andy Licht dropped out last month, leaving just three contenders. Board Vice President Brian Goldberg, lawyer Frances Licht and producer/educator Lewis Hall are also competing. Licht’s name will remain on the ballot in accordance with California law. Mayor Barry Brucker won a seat on the Board of Education in 1997 in the last successful write-in effort in Beverly Hills. Like Brucker, Margo faces the additional challenge of teaching people how to properly fill out a ballot to vote for a write-in candidate, whose statement does not appear on the ballot. “My goal is to meet each of my voters,” Margo told Patch. “Then I can educate them on how to fill out the ballot.”  The father of three has temporarily resigned from his current position as the Beverly Vista PTA co-president and will resign permanently if he wins a school board seat. He had planned to stay at the PTA for a few years before an eventual run for the school board. But when Licht dropped out, he was not happy with the remaining candidates. “There are so many pressing issues before the board—this is not the time for on-the-job training,” he said. As a graduate himself of the Beverly Hills schools system, Margo said his experience as a student, as a current parent and as a former school teacher will help achieve his goal of making city schools the best in the state. Margo taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 10 years before retiring in 2006 when his third child was born. He has maintained his teaching credentials. Margo’s campaign centers around four promises: Encourage and support all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, administrators and students. He considers it vital for parents to be active in the effort to improve schools. Invigorate the curriculum for all students, incorporating technology alongside the latest proven educational practices. Preseve the historic integrity of school campuses as they are modernized through Measure E. Strengthen and nurture the Board of Education relationship with the City Council. Margo said many voters tell him that improving the relationship between the council and school board members should be a top priority. There has been much tension between the two legislative bodies over the approach towards fighting the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s plan to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School, as well as the council’s recent vote to end oil drilling on the BHHS campus in 2016. “I agree with the goals of the school board, but not necessarily their level of confrontation,” he said. “These entities should set an example for the rest of the community.” For more information about Margo, including instructions on how to vote for a write-in candidate, visit his website .
