Assembly Candidates Back ‘Occupy’ Movement

October 15, 2011

The three major candidates vying for California’s newly formed 50th Assembly District , which includes Beverly Hills, are in favor of the growing “Occupy” movement , Patch exclusively reports. The grassroots protest is railing against corporate profits, worker layoffs, the existing federal-tax structure and other issues. Occupy Los Angeles, which is happening downtown, was launched roughly two weeks ago in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street in New York, which began about a month ago. “I support Occupy Los Angeles in their efforts to peacefully demonstrate to express their values and discontent,” Assemblywoman  Betsy Butler , D-Marina del Rey, told Patch. ”The Occupy movement has grown out of a frustration that so many hardworking Americans are not benefiting from the resources enjoyed by Wall Street and the most fortunate amongst us.” Torie Osborn  also stands behind the protesters. “Everyday people rising up to say ‘NO MORE’ to inequality is an honored American tradition. It can magnetize an unstoppable social movement for real change,” Osborn told Patch. ”I embrace this outpouring of students and veterans and teachers—and so many more—fed up with radical inequality and unfair taxation in the richest country in human history.” Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom told Patch that he “absolutely” supports the movement. “As a grassroots expression of people’s concerns and outrage over what’s happening in the country and world, it’s pretty remarkable,” he said. Murdoch Mocked in San Francisco

October 15, 2011

A keynote speech by News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch was hijacked several times by Occupy Wall Street hecklers in San Francisco, California. The shocked audience at the Palace Hotel included leaders of business, politics and education, who were suddenly surprised by screaming OWS activists dressed as Sesame Street characters. Rupert Murdoch was in San Francisco for an annual summit held by the Foundation for Excellence in Education , a nonprofit headed by former Governor Jeb Bush . The media billionaire was speaking on the subject of joining education and technology but was repeatedly interrupted by hecklers and mockers in the swanky Grand Ballroom. The FOX News mogul had to resume his speech, over and over, due to the disruptions by the well-dressed protesters who yelled, “Occupy Sesame Street!” — some of them with character masks from the children’s TV program. Many wonder if the whole thing was a set-up designed to discredit the Occupy Wall Street movement as childish. Critics note how there were conveniently-placed cameramen and photographers to quickly turn around and film each protester “right on cue.” They insist that the “actors” were too old and too educated to be real OWS activists. The add that Rupert Murdoch himself appeared to anticipate each outburst, then laugh it all off with, “A little controversy makes things a little more interesting.” Real activists or fake?

College Football Schedule Week 7: LSU, Tennessee and Ryan Theriot

I know I’ve told this story before, but I don’t remember if I’ve written it here before. So if you’ve heard it before, please indulge me because I don’t really want to write about the possibility of Boise State playing in the Big East Conference or dismissed South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia being hinted at being part of a point-shaving scandal or the potential Conference USA-Mountain West Conference football merger. more › See original here: College Football Schedule Week 7: LSU, Tennessee and Ryan Theriot
