Taylor Armstrong believes she wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for the spotlight of reality television. In the KTLA video below , Armstrong reveals that she may have subconsciously signed up for Bravo’s ‘ The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills ‘ in order to escape what she claims was a wildly abusive marriage with her late husband, Russell Armstrong. While Taylor Armstrong is known by many Bravo loyalists for starring in the network’s massively successful ‘Housewives’ franchise, even those who don’t watch reality (or as some call it ‘unscripted’) television, started tuning in to her life after her husband committed suicide . In late July, just weeks before Russell Armstrong took his life, Taylor Armstrong came forward with serious claims of physical and emotional abuse. According to People , Russell denied some of it but said, “Did I push her? Yes, maybe things happened in the heat of the moment, but it was during a time in our lives that was not characteristic of who we were. This show has literally pushed us to the limit.” After Russell’s suicide, Taylor came forward with more details about their physically abusive relationship. In September, The New York Post ran shocking photos of Armstrong with a serious black eye injury that required plastic surgery to repair. In the months since her husband’s death, Taylor Armstrong has used her platform to speak out about abuse and attempt to help women in situations similar to hers. Armstrong’s daughter accompanied her to the KTLA studio this morning, and she expressed to the anchors just how lucky she feels that both of them are here today. Last Saturday, the Clinton Foundation hosted musicians and guests from around the world to celebrate the “Decade of Difference” milestone — ten years of philanthropic ventures — as well as the Former President’s 65th birthday! Bono, Stevie Wonder, Usher and Kenny Chesney were just a few of the of the musical legends that graced the Hollywood Bowl stage. Lady Gaga even performed her version of Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” with a rendition of “Bill-Romance.” As the Associated Press reports , Clinton joked “I thought, `My God. I get Lady Gaga, and I will have a heart attack celebrating my 65th birthday.” Ironically, the only wardrobe malfunction was from Usher, who ripped his pants. Celebs like Jessica Alba, Stevie Nicks and Barbra Streisand were amongst those who joined in the festivities. Ashton Kutcher also made his first public appearance since allegations about his fidelity to Demi Moore became public. ANAHEIM, Calif. — California’s largest industry group for doctors is calling for the legalization of marijuana even as it maintains that the drug has few proven health benefits. Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the group’s new policy, said doctors are increasingly frustrated by the state’s medical marijuana law, which allows use with a doctor’s recommendation. Physicians are put in the uncomfortable position of having to decide whether to recommend a drug that’s illegal under federal law, Lyman said. “It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not,” he told the newspaper. “That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done. Then, and only then, can we know what it is useful for.” The CMA acknowledges health risks associated with marijuana use and proposes regulation similar to alcohol and tobacco, but the group says the consequences of criminalization outweigh the dangers. The federal government considers cannabis a drug with no medical use. The CMA wants the White House to reclassify it to help promote further research on its medical potential. Earlier this year, the Obama administration turned down a request to reclassify marijuana. That decision is being appealed in federal court by legalization advocates. Lyman called current laws a “failed public health policy.” But critics within the medical community said association leaders did not consider the broader implications of legalizing marijuana. “I think it’s going to lead to more use, and that, to me, is a public health concern,” Dr. Robert DuPont, an M.D. and professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, told the Times. Members of the CMA, which represents more than 35,000 California physicians, were informed of the trustees’ vote Saturday. It is the first major medical association in the nation to urge legalization of cannabis, according to a group spokeswoman. The group’s decision provoked an angry response from some in law enforcement. “Given everything that we know about the physiological impacts of marijuana – how it affects young brains, the number of accidents associated with driving under the influence – it’s just an unbelievably irresponsible position,” said John Lovell, spokesman for the California Police Chiefs Association. The CMA’s parent organization, the American Medical Association, has said the federal government should consider easing research restrictions, according to the Times. ___ See the rest here: California’s Largest Doctors Association: Legalize It!

A group that represents 35,000 doctors in the state is calling for the legalization of marijuana at the federal level. The California Medical Association, a lobbying group for doctors in the state, fights tooth and nail to protect doctors’ rights to treat their patients the best way they know how. The doctors’ group is complaining that right now federal policy is getting in the way of their work. more › See the original post here: Docs for Pot: State’s Largest Doctors’ Group Calls For Legalization

SAN FRANCISCO — Gays and lesbians are not entitled to the same heightened legal protection and scrutiny against discrimination as racial minorities and women in part because they are far from politically powerless and have ample ability to influence lawmakers, lawyers for a U.S. House of Representatives group said in a federal court filing. The filing Friday in San Francisco’s U.S. District Court comes in a lesbian federal employee’s lawsuit that claims the government wrongly denied health insurance coverage to her same-sex spouse. Karen Golinski says the law under which her spouse was denied benefits – the Defense of Marriage Act – violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. But attorneys representing the House’s Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group counter that DOMA is subject to a lower level of court scrutiny because gays and lesbians don’t meet the legal criteria for groups who receive heightened protection from discrimination. Under that lower standard, DOMA is constitutional, they argue. “A spate of recent news stories only confirms the conclusion that homosexuals are far from politically powerless,” the filing says, arguing that the court should deny Golinski’s motion for summary judgment in her favor. “Accordingly, gays and lesbians cannot be labeled `politically powerless’ without draining that phrase of all meaning.” The filing cites a poll of Americans showing support for gay candidates, New York’s decision to legalize gay marriage, and the lifting of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces. Golinski’s attorney, Tara Borelli, said in a phone interview Saturday, “We don’t think that DOMA can survive a court review under any level.” A recent ruling by a District Court judge in Massachusetts supported that view, Borelli said. Golinski’s case has received support from the Obama administration. In a brief filed in July that urged the court to find DOMA unconstitutional, the administration argued that it reflected Congressional hostility to gays and targeted an immutable characteristic – sexual orientation – that has nothing to do with someone’s ability to contribute to society. The administration also characterized gays and lesbians as minorities with limited political power. It had previously said it would not defend the marriage act. The House’s Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group stepped in to defend it. See the rest here: Do Gays And Lesbians Deserve The Same Protections As Other Minorities?
