Some people will sleep on a sidewalk for the best Black Friday deals. Others have already started working out their mouse-clicking finger for Cyber Monday. But if neither scenario appeals to you, there is an alternative—Small Business Saturday. Patch recently profiled Tom’s Toys and A.sweeT. in an effort to highlight independent shops that call Beverly Hills home. After a shopper pepper sprayed crowds at an L.A. Wal-Mart to grab her Xbox 360 , the LAPD has launched a manhunt for the bargain-hunting woman. The Los Angeles Police Department has provided a more complete description of the Black Friday Pepper Spray Bandit who terrorized shoppers at the Porter Ranch Wal-Mart location. LAPD detectives are asking Southern Californians for help in identifying the Latina female in her 30s, 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, wearing a black sweater and black pants . Numerous L.A. Wal-Mart shoppers were treated for injuries after the pepper spray assault that sent the crowded store into terror and panic. LAPD detectives are reviewing Wal-Mart video surveillance and receipts to identify the suspect who has shocked the nation with her violent disregard for others in an attempt to purchase an Xbox gaming console on sale. The woman allegedly pepper sprayed children in the face to get first pick of the sale on Xbox 360s. According to witnesses fleeing the store, the pepper spray odor made it hard to breath.

“California” is a 2011 song about California by the electronic rock music artist Tom Ugly from Sydney, Australia. With a sound which many compare to Radiohead and Beck , Tom Ugly, 20, provides a rather straight-forward marijuana-laced vision of the Golden State in “California.” (This blog hears a few echoes of INXS in the ambiance of this rhythmic booty-shaker, incidentally.) “California, I never said I like it better California, although it’s true I like the weather California, the sun floats upon you like a feather California, and everything around you is hella stella La, La, La, La, La, La Land I want to go to California.” These are among the tamest lyrics in a song that dances on the ‘parental advisory’ line. “California” comes from the perspective of one who dreams of someday going to California but, in the meantime, meets someone who promises to take him on another kind of “trip.” The song is obviously geared toward the members of Generation Y , many of whom instantly think “pot” at the mere mention of the Golden State today. Considered a new anthem among cannabis circles, “California” by Tom Ugly is one of the edgiest songs about California to ever accompany twisting-one-up and toking. TOM UGLY

Now that Thanksgiving is over, many Beverly Hills families are preparing their homes with holiday decorations. But before you string up Christmas lights or put out the electric menorah, read these safety tips from Southern California Edison . “Most accidents are preventable. We hope people will take a few moments to make sure their equipment is in good working order and that there are no unsafe situations in the home,” said Bill Messner, SCE’s acting director of corporate environment, health and safety. He urged residents to check for overloaded wall plugs, frayed light strings and other electrical safety and fire hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association: Thirty percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur during December, January and February. Christmas tree and holiday decoration fires result in twice the number of injuries and five times more fatalities per fire than the average winter holiday fire. On average, 260 home fires begin with Christmas trees each year, resulting in 12 deaths, 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage. Candles start 45 percent of home decoration fires. Nearly 6,000 people a year are treated in hospital emergency rooms for falls associated with holiday decorations. More than half of these injuries involve falls from ladders or roofs while decorating outdoors. About 4,000 injuries associated with electric extension cords result in emergency room visits each year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. SCE offered the following holiday lighting safety tips: Put lights on a timer, and unplug them when you leave the house. This also helps save energy and money. Beware of counterfeit or poor quality electrical products. Use only lighting and cords approved by the Underwriters Laboratories, an independent, nonprofit organization that tests electrical components and equipment for potential hazards. LED holiday lights are a fraction of the cost to run, and they don’t get as hot as incandescent holiday lights, reducing the chance of a fire. Only use electrical cords and light strands that are in good condition; don’t overload outlets; and use only three strands per outlet or a surge protector. When hanging lights make sure staples, tacks and nails do not pierce or pinch wires. Loop a plastic zip cord around the lighting strand and secure the zip cord to the wall. For more tips on lighting and safety during the holidays, click here . This story was compiled with information from City News Service.
