Pedestrians in downtown Seattle jumped into action on Friday after an armed thief robbed a jewelry store – with a group of bystanders stopping the suspect and holding the man down in a scary sidewalk melee in front of the Hotel MAX until police could arrive. A hotel doorman was shot in the scuffle but the suspect was arrested and the loot he attempted to run off with was recovered. It all began early on Friday morning, when a man, donning a white rubber mask and carrying a gun, stole a tray of platinum-colored rings from the Express Jewelers boutique in the Westlake Center shopping mall. During the heist, the thief fired shots, which were heard at a Wells Fargo branch located at the mall. Bank employees alerted police to a suspicious incident. The robber fled the jewelry store and ran from the mall but he was chased by 35-year-old Roberto Sandoval, a doorman at the nearby Mayflower Park Hotel. Sandoval pursued the thief for several blocks until the suspect shot the hotel employee, directly across from the federal courthouse, hitting him in the arm. When the shots were fired on the street, bystanders sprang into action.
