Anthony Bourdain on Wolfgang Puck: Playboy has a lengthy interview with…

Playboy has a lengthy interview with Anthony Bourdain in which he talks shit about vegans and Bobby Flay’s brand of “candy- colored sort of crowd-pleasing television .” He also talks Wolfgang Puck: ” Listen, I’m not eating in his shitty pizza restaurants . I think it’s bullshit, and it breaks my heart to see him on QVC or whatever, but the fact is he paid his dues. He’s an important guy. It’s an Orson Welles thing: He made Citizen Kane, so it doesn’t matter what he does after that .” [Playboy via -EN- ] Follow this link: Anthony Bourdain on Wolfgang Puck: Playboy has a lengthy interview with…

School Lunch Gets a New Look

October 14, 2011

School lunch is no longer about tasteless hamburgers and soggy French fries—at least not at Beverly Hills High School . Wednesday marked the grand opening of the Beverly Cafe, the high school’s new and improved cafeteria. Throngs of students lined up to choose from a variety of meal options, from salads, pizza and pasta to panini sandwiches, chicken wings and burritos. Side choices range from fresh fruit and yogurt parfait to crisp sweet potato fries. Kosher food is also available. “Going from good to great is not only about academics,” said school board President Lisa Korbatov, who was on hand for the Beverly Cafe’s ribbon-cutting. “It’s also about taking pride in preparing and serving great food that our kids are excited to eat.” After years of lackluster participation in the Beverly Hills Unified School District’s lunch program, the district has joined forces with Chartwells, a division of the Compass Group, the largest food service company in North America. BHUSD’s five-year contract with Chartwells is bringing high-quality lunch to the city’s five public schools. The price of a single meal tops out at $5.75 for high school students and $4.50 for the K-8 schools. The response thus far has been overwhelmingly positive . “What we’re seeing here is what success looks like. It’s a great collaboration between the public and private sector,” Chartwells Vice President Travis Young said. “You see the success with the kids. It’s not cafeteria food anymore. It’s cafe food.” Before the district’s lunch program was outsourced to Chartwells, about 110 people were purchasing lunch at BHHS on any given day. Now that number is closer to 550 a day. There is also a mobile cart that serves students who eat lunch on the high school’s sprawling front lawn. Senior Matin Mehdizadeh, 18, said his favorite option so far is the turkey and cheese panini. “The Beverly Cafe has made great progress and is more of an attraction to kids at school for a good lunch,” he said. But it’s not just the students who are lining up to eat school lunch. “It’s like real food,” said Pete Van Rossum, a 10th grade history teacher. “The era of tater tots and pizza bagels is over.” Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on  Twitter  and “Like” us on  Facebook . Sick Leave on the Rise: As more and more municipal and…

As more and more municipal and state governments consider requiring restaurants to offer their employees sick leave, restaurants are faced with logistical hurdles . After all, as one Restaurant Association representative put it, ” People will be able to call in sick on holidays or Friday nights, and there will be nothing an employer can do about it.” Better than sneezing in the soup? Supposedly there’s a new bar plus shmancy new dining room and lounge as well. More to come. &#183 World Cafe Remodel, Public Launches Lunch, More! Mary Hall: Blue Water Grill: The Back Story on a Los Angeles Favorite

Mary Hall: Blue Water Grill: The Back Story on a Los Angeles Favorite

Pictured: Fresh seafood at the Blue Water Grill in Redondo Beach. The Blue Water Grill at King Harbor in Redondo Beach has long been a favorite of mine. I typically eat there several times a month because of their delicious, fresh seafood. However, I had no idea how committed the restaurant was to fresh seafood until I attended their recent “Sustainable Seafood Summit.” What does the term sustainable seafood mean? Basically, it is the practice of fisheries and fishermen using environmentally responsible harvesting methods. Blue Water Grill chooses species of fish for their menu that they are confident are sustainable in the area from which they are harvested. The goal is to ensure that we are protecting the future of the delicious fish that we like to eat. And that is important. If some of nature’s most delicious fish are farmed out and not replenished, then we will no longer be able to enjoy them. How lonely would dining life be without swordfish, Chilean sea bass or fresh lobster? Your waiter at Blue Water Grill can tell you that Atlantic swordfish has been safe to eat since 1999 and that Chilean sea bass from Patagonia is no longer an endangered species. Pictured: Chilean sea bass sauteed in butter and olive oil. If you see fish on the menu at Blue Water Grill, you can be confident that it is safe to eat, and not an endangered species. Owner Jim Ulcickas explains, “Currently Bluewater Grill’s menu is 85 percent certified sustainable, by Aquarium of the Pacific or the Monterey Aquarium, but we won’t be satisfied until we reach 100 percent.” So dedicated is the restaurant to serving fresh fish, they even have their own fishing boat in Redondo Beach that goes out and brings fresh fish into the restaurant direct from the Pacific Ocean. But beyond fishing responsibly and conservation goals, there are other compelling reasons to eat at Blue Water Grill. As a regular customer, I can tell you that they have delicious salmon, amazing salt and pepper shrimp (as good as any in Chinatown), incredible cedar plank roasted salmon and farm raised mussels served in a spicy Thai green curry sauce. Their weekday happy hour specials featured $4, $5 and $6 drink and appetizer specials. Their wine list includes a very special Acrobat Oregon Pinot Gris by King Estates, which nicely compliments their seafood. On the weekends, look for their Bloody Mary bar where you can top your drink off with an assortment of spices, peppers, olives and more. There are many reasons to try Blue Water Grill, but the foremost one is the food is delicious and the ocean setting is serene — an oasis of calm in a hectic city. How Much $ Do We Need To Survive In CA?

October 4, 2011

Story courtesy of California Watch By Joanna Lin A family of four in California would need an average of more than $63,000 a year – nearly triple the federal poverty level – to cover its basic needs, according to an analysis of the state’s cost of living to be released today. The 2011 Self-Sufficiency Standard, released by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development , a national research organization, shows that in every county in California, the federal poverty level falls short of meeting basic needs: housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and other essential household expenses. Taking all these costs into consideration, the standard calculates the minimum annual income required for 156 family compositions in each county. The pre-tax income needed to make ends meet for a family of two working, married adults; a preschooler; and a primary school-aged child ranged from $53,775 in Tulare County to $86,629 in Marin County. For a family of four, the 2011 federal poverty level , which is based on the cost of food alone and does not take into account regional cost-of-living differences in the contiguous United States, is $22,350. “The federal poverty guidelines miss this whole population of individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Jenny Chung Mejia, an attorney and program manager for the center. “Essentially, what happens is they earn too much to qualify but yet don’t have enough to make ends meet; they fall in this sort of policy-benefits gap.” Many people and entities, including policymakers, public agencies, philanthropic organizations, advocates and service providers, use the Self-Sufficiency Standard as a benchmarking tool to gauge the needs of their communities. In affluent counties, needs often go unrecognized, Chung Mejia said. “The public has this perception that if you live in Marin County, for example, you’re not going to be poor,” she said. While figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show 9.1 percent of the population in Marin County lives below the poverty level, the county’s median household income – $83,867 – is lower than its Self-Sufficiency Standard. Even in counties where median income exceeds the Self-Sufficiency Standard, advocates say the cost of basic needs can be striking. In Santa Clara County, for example, the median household income, $85,002, is just slightly higher than the Self-Sufficiency Standard for a family of two adults, a preschooler and a school-aged child. According to the standard, the cost of food for such a family – $852 a month, based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s low-cost food plan – eats up more than 12 percent of household income. More than 91,500 students in the county are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school. But to qualify for the programs, a student’s household income must be at or less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level – or $41,347.50 for a family of four. “There’s this huge gap,” said Dana Bunnett, director of Kids in Common, a program of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte that advocates for children in Santa Clara County. “We really have needs for families that go beyond those federal guidelines.” Although the Self-Sufficiency Standard accounts for more basic costs than the federal poverty level does, it misses others that many Californians would consider essential – including cell phone and Internet service. “That just makes it all the more crazy,” Chung Mejia said. “We’re just putting forth a very, very modest budget.” Joanna Lin is an investigative reporter for California Watch, a project of the non-profit Center for Investigative reporting.
