Golden California Enigma

October 13, 2011

From between the eastward waves of water and the westward waves of humanity, a golden girl has reached the four corners of the earth. Exactly three decades and thrice three decans later, a red carpet is now being unfurled by three sets of trilateral hands masquerading as the Trinity. Thirty eager fingers are releasing the veil to expose the ‘goddess of gold’ for a mirror image rumored to lie beneath. Could they not have heeded the mysteries of nature instead? The same desert palms, Joshua trees, blonde hills, sunsets and beaches facing west indeed reveal the reflective clues sought, but alas. One brother seeking the birthright of the other has been lured afar from the center of the world to here, the end of the earth. With his physicality, psychology and spirituality consequently trisected, three shadows now seek a unity of purpose in this golden mirage as they war against each other in greed. This mirage, however, leads to distorted images and mysteries.

No need to trek downtown or to Marina del Rey for a Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi or Modern Tuna Melt because later this month Mendocino Farms will debut its fourth farmers market-driven sandwich shop at the intersection of Santa Monica and La Brea. Check out these early shots of ply, there’s clearly still a ways to go, but the bones are in place for another clean and comfortable cafe which is beginning to resemble this handsome little number out west. While MdR’s floating tin ceiling makes a repeat appearance at Mendo WeHo, John Kim of Poon Design went out on a limb to up the earthy factor by adding a large ficus tree growing from the center of a communal table in the middle of the restaurant. Just like prior locations, eco-friendly elements are spread throughout the space from reclaimed railroad ties as soffits to ubiquitous reclaimed barn wood in the large outdoor patio. On the subject of food, this right here is the general Mendo menu, but expect daily sandwiches specials and other tbd menu items not available at other locations. &#183 Mendocino Farms in WeHo Will Open This Fall [~ELA~] Link: Plywood Report : Inside Mendocino Farms WeHo, Opening Late October

2 Gigantic Trees Fall In A Forest: Did Anybody Hear It? (PHOTOS)

October 4, 2011

SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — The popular Trail of 100 Giants is temporarily closed in Sequoia National Forest after two of the towering trees fell side by side over the trail. The Forest Service said the downed trees were reported Friday and no one was injured. Officials are still working to determine the ages of the trees and why they fell. Some of the giant trees in that area are 245 feet tall and have diameters of 18 feet. Photographs showed the unearthed root wads of the fallen trees were about three times as tall as a firefighter standing at the base. Forest Service officials said tourists can still see giant Sequoias at Freeman Creek Grove along Lloyd Meadow Road and other areas of the park.
