Tamie Adaya: West Hollywood: A Cultural Gem

December 2, 2011

Nestled between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, and bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains and an honor guard of mega-billboards, West Hollywood, the Creative City, is one of Los Angeles’ finest examples of the culture of the cutting-edge. WeHo is home to 39,000 full-time residents, yet plays host to a weekend influx of 78,000 who come to take advantage of world-class shopping, dining and events the likes of the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party and largest Halloween Street Party in the world; quite the attractive blend of intimacy and vibrancy. A two-square-mile city, WeHo natives put the “nobody walks in LA” cliche to rest. There are only three Cecconi’s Restaurants in the world, one in London, one in Miami and one, at the Melrose Avenue and Robertson Boulevard intersection, in the heart of WeHo. Cecconi’s is an absolute must for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or unparalleled Italian Tapas. Just down the block on Melrose, you’ll run into one of my favorite hair salons, Galvin & Benjamin, breathtaking boutiques such as Maxfield , Marc Jacobs , Alexander McQueen , Paul Smith , Miu Miu …and if you’re a vintage-maven like me, just a few blocks further east and you’ll find some of LA’s best kept secrets, selling gowns and formal-wear from the 20′s, 30′s and 40′s. The City’s “Art on the Outside” engages visitors and residents with innovative artwork. Currently WeHo is hosting seven colossal abstract sculptures from world-renowned contemporary artists along the grass median of Santa Monica Blvd, historic Route 66. Sprinkled throughout the city and also running through June 2012, you can also find multi-lingual poetic municipal signs by artist Rebecca Lowry. But, the cherry on top of WeHo at the moment, lies within MOCA’s Pacific Design Center Space, where former Dior Homme designer, YSL art & collections director, and International Designer of the Year, Hedi Slimane demonstrates a uniquely experiential & uplifting breed of story-telling with his exhibit “California Song.” On the ground floor Slimane’s ‘California years’ black-and-white photographs are framed in unfinished wooden boxes and separated from one another by mirror’s, offering individualized vantage points to take stock of the series of narratives being whispered in the intimate space. A genuine look at California’s rock and roll heritage is splattered throughout the gallery, from monochrome portraits of Francis Bean and her mother Courtney Love, Beach Boy Brian Wilson and up-and-coming lead-singer Christopher Owens, set next to iconic images of broken down squats, vintage pontiacs against the Pacific Ocean and a blurry look at the American dream. The top floor, produced exclusively for MOCA, showcases an outstanding sonic & motion-picture installation. Photographs are projected onto a cube in the center of the room, surrounded by speakers, inviting you to soak up your own version of Slimane’s slightly morose exploration of youth subculture & beauty culture, and the immersive intersection of fashion as art & photo as literature. “California Song” will be on display at MOCA’s Pacific Design Center space in West Hollywood through Jan-22, 2012. Beverly Hills Porsche Is Moving to Westwood

November 11, 2011

Beverly Hills Porsche is keeping its name, but changing its location. The dealership is planning to move its showroom from 8425 Wilshire Blvd. to the 10950 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in Westwood, according to the Daily News . After more than 20 years in Beverly Hills, the city said the relocation was a “surprise.” “We are reaching out to them to better understand their decision,” Beverly Hills spokeswoman Therese Kosterman said in a statement. “While we are always disappointed when a business leaves the city, we are delighted that other businesses compatible with the Beverly Hills entertainment brand, such as Playboy, MGM and Google, have chosen to locate here just within the past year.” The Daily News is reporting that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Office of Economic and Business Policy attracted the high-end car dealership by speeding up the permitting process. Villaraigosa is also supporting an ordinance that would exempt automobile dealers new to L.A. from the city’s business tax. Beverly Hills Porsche is already eligible for temporary tax relief for new businesses moving there. Representatives at Beverly Hills Porsche were not immediately available for comment. Coming Attractions : Andrew Kirschner To Open Tar & Roses Early December

Coming Attractions : Andrew Kirschner To Open Tar & Roses Early December

Tar & Roses , the anticipated and seemingly slow going project from chef Andrew Kirschner (Wilshire), is estimated to open on December 1 . A release today reveals a few more details on the ingredient-driven Santa Monica eatery, and we’re told that the “soul” of the restaurant is its wood-burning oven. Kirschner plans to burn a slew of different woods (almond, apple, olive, oak, walnut) to impart flavor on food, and every day the menu will list the daily choice of wood. Here, the menu is influenced by Kirschner’s travels to Italy, Spain, and Southeast Asia, and the expansive menu seemingly offers something for everyone. To start there’s a “Bruschetta Bar” where guests can order combos like chopped liver/pickled onions and rabbit rillettes/prune jam/marcona almonds, in addition to charcuterie and cheese. Meanwhile, the main menu is divided into the following categories: snacks, veggies, small, and large. Selects range from crispy lamb belly with minted apple chutney to Meyer lemon ricotta gnocchi with charred baby broccoli to wood-roasted crispy pork knuckle with creamy farro, pickled pear, and chile salad. Winemaker Chris Keller has worked out the wine list with both domestic and imported bottles. As for aesthetic, Kirschner will combine some old and some new plus reclaimed elements when possible. Tables are made from wood and Carrera marble, serveware is Heath Ceramics, and water glasses are made from recycled wine bottles. Expect polished concrete floors, black banquettes, plus an outdoor space described as an “urban patio.” Tar & Roses has capacity to seat 75 diners and will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10:30PM. Lunch should debut next year. &#183 All Tar & Roses Coverage [~ELA~] Read this article: Coming Attractions : Andrew Kirschner To Open Tar & Roses Early December

Plan Ahead to Avoid Obama’s Motorcade

October 24, 2011

President Barack Obama is returning to Los Angeles Monday during rush-hour traffic for two fundraisers and a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno . He is scheduled to depart SoCal for San Francisco mid-morning Tuesday.  Obama will arrive at LAX between 4:30-5 p.m. Monday. He will be flown from the airport by helicopter to the UCLA area to avoid the closure of the 405 Freeway, according to L.A. City Councilman Bill Rosendahl. From there the president will motorcade to Hancock Park for two fundraisers held that evening.  Rosendahl said motorists should be prepared for blockades on major east-west boulevards linking West Los Angeles with the Hancock Park area. “Sunset, Santa Monica, Pico and Olympic [boulevards] are under consideration for the route to Hancock Park for the fundraiser[s],” Rosendahl told KNX radio. Delays are also expected on major north-south avenues that cross those throughways, especially streets between the 405 Freeway and Highland Avenue.  On Tuesday morning the president will tape an appearance for Jay Leno’s late-night talk show, which is located at the NBC studios in Burbank. More delays are expected in the Cahuenga Pass and Burbank area.  The exact route of Obama’s motorcade will not be revealed, nor will the location of where the president is spending the night. He is scheduled to fly out of LAX at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.  Rosendahl told KNX that he has been told by the Secret Service that there will be no hard road closuers. “After the president clears a certain location, they will immediately open up the streets,” he said. This story was compiled with information from City News Service. Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on  Twitter  and “Like” us on  Facebook . Read more here: Plan Ahead to Avoid Obama’s Motorcade
