Reserve Deputy Who Apprehended Arson Suspect Thanks Community
West Hollywood Sheriff’s reserve Deputy Shervin Lalezary thanked citizen responders at a Tuesday afternoon news conference for their help in leading authorities to the man suspected of starting more than 50 fires in the area. “Once the fires started occurring, the city of West Hollywood called with every suspicious person they thought they saw,” said Lalezary, a full-time attorney whose office is located at 9454 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. “And that came a long way with the investigation.” The volunteer deputy’s traffic stop at Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue early Monday morning led to the arrest of Harry Burkhart , a 24-year-old Hollywood resident and German national . Burkhart is being held without bail in downtown Los Angeles on suspicion of arson of an inhabited dwelling and is tentatively scheduled to make a court appearance in Van Nuys on Wednesday. “The information that I had—basically what was out in the media—was a male, white adult, short ponytail, receding hairline,” Lalezary said. “There was a call of a vehicle fire right when I was about to initiate the traffic stop. Our radio communication was pretty tied up.” The Associated Press reported that Lalezary, who has a law degree from the University of Southern California, became a reserve deputy in 2007. His certification as a Level 3 reserve with the sheriff’s station allows him to perform traffic duties. “I saw that there was an LAPD [Los Angeles Police Department] unit that saw me turn on my lights,” Lalezary said. “They rolled up right behind me … to basically cover me while I searched the vehicle.” West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Prang, who worked as a senior adviser to L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca for nine years, told reporters that he could not have been more pleased. “We are very proud that it was one of our deputies who tracked the case,” Prang told Patch after the conference. “This is obviously a case that transcended municipal counties … God knows how many potential lives and damaged properties were saved.” As a volunteer reserve deputy, Lalezary puts in a minimum of 1,064 hours for $1 each year, said Capt. Phil Hansen, who is in charge of the Reserve Forces Bureau. “Reserves work on patrol, investigative capacities, work on community problems,” Hansen said at the conference. “They have spent quite a great deal in West Hollywood this past year.” Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on Twitter and “Like” us on Facebook . L.A. Arson Suspect Under Investigation in Canada
Police in Vancouver, British Columbia, are investigating if alleged Los Angeles arsonist Harry Burkhart is also responsible for a string of arson fires in the Canadian province. A spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department told the Los Angeles Times that discussions about Burkhart, 24, a German national living in Hollywood, were underway with L.A. police. The Times report came after several Canadian news outlets linked Burkhart to at least 12 unsolved arson fires in Vancouver. He and his mother reportedly lived there before moving to L.A. But Vancouver police have said nothing more than that they were talking with the Los Angeles Police Department. Burkhart is jailed in L.A. and charged with 28 counts of arson of property and nine counts of arson of an inhabited structure. His bail was set at $2.85 million. Burkhart was arrested early Monday in connection with the fires that were set beginning last week at some 53 locations around Los Angeles County, including Hollywood, West Hollywood and North Hollywood. His mother, Dorothee Burkhart , was due in federal court Friday afternoon. Federal prosecutors are seeking to deport her on warrants from Germany, where she is accused of fraud. Her son’s anger over the expected deportation was what triggered Burkhart’s four-day arson spree over the New Year’s holiday, prosecutors have said. Arson Suspect Identified as Hollywood Resident, German National
Harry Burkhart, a 24-year-old Hollywood resident and German national reportedly in a dispute with federal immigration officials, was identified at a Monday evening news conference as the suspected arsonist responsible for setting 53 fires in the Los Angeles area. “He is the most dangerous arsonist in Los Angeles County that I can recall,” L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca said of Burkhart, who lives on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Officials were tipped off to Burkhart after he recently made a scene at a Los Angeles Immigration Court hearing, according to the Los Angeles Times . The Times reported that police speculate he might have started the fires because he was upset over his mother’s pending deportation. Burkhart was booked at 1:48 p.m. Monday and his bail was set at $250,000. He has been charged with one felony count of arson, but police said more charges will follow. No date has been set for his first court appearance. Police said Burkhart, a burly man with a ponytail, looked like the man seen in video at the scene of several fires. Police released video of the suspect Sunday night. West Hollywood Sheriff’s volunteer Reserve Deputy Shervin Lalezary detained Burkhart at about 3 a.m. Monday at Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue during a traffic stop, police said. “As we speak, search warrants are being served at this individual’s residence. We will know much more tomorrow than we know today,” Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said. “We have to proceed with caution.” The suspected arsonist allegedly set 11 fires between midnight Sunday and the time he was arrested early Monday, Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Property damage totals are estimated to be around $3 million. “There’s so much more work to be done. We’ve got a bunch of clues, a bunch of leads, more people to interview, search warrants to execute,” L.A. Police Commander Andrew Smith said. “Our guys will be working around the clock. They’ll be working for many days on this case.” Los Angeles Fire Chief Brian Cummings asked communities to remain vigilant. “If you see something, say something,” he said. “The information from the public from what they were observing over the past four days—and the tips they called in—were critical in getting us information and being able to respond quickly to these incidents, and to resolve them quickly without further loss of life or property damage.” This report was compiled with information from City News Service.
