Westside COG Considers Biking Projects
In an effort to make traveling through the Westside easier, the transportation committee of the Westside Cities Council of Government (WSCCOG) met Monday to discuss ways to support bicycling in the area. The WSCCOG is a collaboration between the cities of Beverly Hills, Culver City, West Hollywood and Santa Monica as well as Westside portions of Los Angeles and unincorporated Los Angeles County. In attendance were the three elected officials on the committee: Councilmember Jeff Cooper of Culver City, Councilmember John Heilman of West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills Vice Mayor Dr. William Brien. The meeting also included WSCCOG Executive Director Maria Rychlicki, staff members from the member communities, a representative from the Federal Highway Administration and members of Angelenos Against Gridlock and Better Bike. Rychlicki said the WSCCOG unites the otherwise autonomous cities so they can take advantage of opportunities as a sub-region. Among the topics discussed Monday was closing the gaps in bike lanes created when they pass through multiple cities. An example given was a bike lane on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood that stops when it reaches Beverly Hills and resumes in Los Angeles. “The cyclist gets on the road and suddenly the bicycle lane drops off the planet,” Rychlicki said. The committee is working on identifying five bike routes to improve based on project feasibility, safety and connecting as many member communities as possible. In addition to closing the gaps between cities, the committee will recommend signage to help riders find the bike lanes. Possible areas to improve include the bike lane on Santa Monica Boulevard and a north-south route into Culver City, perhaps on Beverly Drive. The committee is also studying a bike-sharing program based on those used in Washington, D.C., and Paris, where participants check out bikes to use in different parts of the city in an effort to close the so-called “last mile” between public transportation and user destinations. The committee discussed the best ways to implement such a program in the Westside. “It’s essential that, in whatever program we develop, somebody can get a bike in West Hollywood, ride to Santa Monica, drop it off there and then, if they wanted, get a bike in Culver City and ride back to West Hollywood,” West Hollywood Councilmember Heilman said. The committee will discuss these plans further at its next meeting, which Rychlicki said may be scheduled before Christmas. The committee’s recommendations will be brought to the entire COG board in January for a vote on whether to adopt them as formal recommendations for the member communities. Council Selects Contractor for Library Renovations
The City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve a construction firm’s bid to renovate 16,500 square feet of the Beverly Hills Public Library . The project will focus on “the children’s area of the library, circulation lobby and relocation of the Teen Zone,” according to a report by Associate Project Manager Donielle Kahikina. Fifteen firms applied for the city’s contractor prequalification process. Three firms were prequalified by staff. W.E. O’Neil Construction, Bayley Construction and C.W. Driver Construction were permitted to submit bids. W.E. O’Neil was chosen after tendering the lowest bid of $3.2 million. The council added an additional $320,500 in contingency funds “to cover unforeseen conditions,” the report states. Assistant Director of Community Services Nancy Hunt-Coffey said the project, which is designed by Culver City-based architectural firm Johnson Favaro, will improve the library’s lighting and reduce noise levels. Hunt-Coffey also told council members the renovations will maximize the library’s floor space, improve access for computer technology, and boost seating capacity for the public and library staff. “We’re looking for light and bright,” Hunt-Coffey said, adding that there will be a ”balance between the classical design of the library and contemporary design.” The library is slated to close Feb. 4-5 as staff members relocate the youth areas to the auditorium and meeting rooms on the second floor. Construction will begin the following week. The project will likely take a year and a half to complete. Prior to the council’s vote, Beverly Hills residents spoke on the issue. Susan Mischler questioned the amount of money the renovations will cost the city and called for a “line-item” review of the project’s expenses “so that the public knows exactly what we’re spending and for what.” Former Mayor Nancy Krasne, Human Relations Commissioner Tom Pease and former Mayor Ed Brown all agreed that the cost of the project is too high. “I just don’t see where you’re going to build for $250 a square foot … to get these improvements,” Brown said. “Something’s wrong.” Charlotte Hill-Skura, president of the Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library, and Laurie Goldman, a former president of the group, are in favor of the project. “If you think about what this money’s being spent for, it’s the children’s area,” Goldman said, noting the increasingly large number of young library patrons. Citing concerns over the project’s $3.5 million price tag, Councilman John Mirisch cast the dissenting vote. “Is this something that we need, or something that we want?” he said. Mirisch said the money could be better spent on priorities such as improvements to the city’s southeast section . Still, the majority of the council was enthusiastic about the forthcoming library renovations. “I think the whole project, every part of it, is an investment in our future,” Mayor Barry Brucker said. Margie Petersen, who co-founded the Petersen Automotive Museum with her late husband, publishing magnate Robert Petersen, died in her Beverly Hills home Friday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 76. Born in New York, Petersen (née McNally) worked as a model and actress in television commercials, including spots for Ivory Soap and Coca-Cola. During her marriage, Petersen spearheaded many philanthropic efforts with her husband, having worked with the Music Center, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild and Childhelp U.S.A. Petersen was an active participant in projects aimed at battling cancer. She helped raise millions of dollars for a women’s cancer research center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. In 2008, the Margie & Robert E. Petersen Foundation gave $15 million to the St. John’s Health Center and the John Wayne Cancer Institute. She was also a founder of STOP Cancer, and a member of the Associates for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Studies. Robert Petersen died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 80. The Petersens were predeceased by their two young sons, who died in a small plane crash in 1975. Memorial services for Margie Petersen are pending. Rescue Dog of the Week: Owen the Cocker Spaniel
Owen is a 15-year-old male Cocker Spaniel who was rescued from a high-kill shelter where he was on the euthanasia list. Despite his age and the cataracts that impair his vision at night, he is in excellent condition. Owen is easy, laid-back and an absolute sweetheart. He is neutered, up to date on his routine shots and house trained. This pup is looking for a great forever home where he can enjoy his retirement years. Ace of Hearts is a 501c-3 dog rescue foundation dedicated to rescuing dogs—the day they are to be euthanized—from various Los Angeles shelters and placing them in loving homes. It does not take dogs in. It rescues only from shelters. Its adoption days are normally held every Saturday at the West Hollywood Petco at 508 N.
