A Reminder to Be Cautious When Posting Comments Online

January 10, 2012

Real Simple  magazine has dubbed this week  Be Nice on the Internet Week . I like it. I’m in. Not that I’m not nice on the Internet. I am. I’m very nice. In fact, I am way nicer on the Internet than I am in real life. Seriously. Ask my kids. Perhaps it is because I have worked in a Web world for the last four years that I am so cognizant of the importance of proper comportment online.  Since I spend a great deal of my time watching what others are saying on the Web, I am hyper-aware of my own behavior. At least I hope I am. Real Simple  decided to go this route after doing a survey about social media behavior for its annual January “be a better person” issue. The results of the survey are fascinating and the editors wrote that “we’ll explore the psychological impact of Net negativity … Visit realsimple.com/beniceweek for full details and pledge with us to think before you post.” Now,  Real Simple  is focused on social media, like Facebook, where there is certainly well-documented cases of cyber-bullying that have gone so far as to end in suicide. To me, this idea of “think before you post” needs to be extended to everyone online, as even news sites have morphed into the area of social media with their comment platforms. And sometimes, it can get ugly. When I worked at theday.com as breaking news editor, a large part of my job was moderating comments. And because I had full view of the back of the house, I knew who many of the anonymous commenters really were. And I was occasionally shocked to find that the worst offenders in the comments—those who posted insults, attacks, made fun of others and were generally big jerks—were in their offline life leaders in the community. Anonymity gives many people courage—it’s like having one-too-many drinks at the bar and suddenly thinking you can take on the world. But even some of those who use their real names online go past the line of good manners and good debate. I wonder if it is because they are sitting in front of their computers, which also gives one the feeling that you are not really “talking” to others, you are simply typing. Patch is a news provider, but a major part of its mission and philosophy is to be a community platform—a gathering place where the free exchange of ideas and issues can help people figure out solutions and make changes for the better. A major component of Patch is the community’s ability to contribute through comments, adding photos or videos, posting announcements and events, and writing letters to the editor. I love Patch’s  terms of use , which every reader agrees to when registering: Communities thrive when people care about each other, and as such, Patch expects all of its users to be respectful of others. … While we encourage people to be honest and post what’s on their mind, there are some types of Content that we simply can’t allow on Patch. … You might boil it down to three main policies: “Keep it clean,” “Don’t try to trick people,” and “Treat others as you’d like to be treated.” Easy, right? Not as easy as it sounds, based on some of the experiences we’ve had. But the in-the-now aspect of news coverage on Patch, and online in general, is what draws me to this latest incarnation of journalism—the fact that we are no longer all sitting alone in our kitchens, reading the news and talking to our pets about how we feel about what’s happening. Instead, we are reading the news and are able to state our opinions and add our two cents immediately—and share it with the world. And the world can answer back. Fabulous. I always think about posting online this way: Would I say it in front of my mother? Would I say it in front of my kids? Would I want someone to say it to my face exactly like this? Will I be sorry later? Be nice on the Internet—be nice in life. Words to live by. Elissa Bass is a regional editor for Patch.com in Connecticut. New JPA Provides $9.7 Mil a Year for BHUSD

January 10, 2012

The Board of Education is expected Tuesday evening to approve a new four-year Joint Powers Agreement that provides $9.7 million annually in city support for district schools. The agreement is also scheduled to be discussed and voted upon during the regular City Council meeting that night.  The JPA is a four-year agreement in which the city pays the district for access to school facilities. The current JPA pays BHUSD $10.3 million a year and expires July 1, 2012. Council liaisons Mayor Barry Brucker, Vice Mayor Willie Brien, school board President Brian Goldberg and school board Vice President Jake Manaster spent the last six months negotiating the new agreement. In the final negotiations, Councilwoman Lili Bosse took Brucker’s place. City Treasurer Elliot Finkel had recommended cutting the next JPA to $9 million a year , so the $9.6 million figure is a relief for the school district. The JPA traditionally provides about 20 percent of the annual BHUSD budget. “I am very pleased with the negotiations and feel this new JPA is a real win for our community,” Goldberg told Patch. “I am hopeful that the full board and full council will agree and approve this newest JPA on Tuesday night.” Under the agreement, the district will get paid four times a year—Jan. 1, April 1, July 1 and Oct. 1. The new JPA agreement also provides a separate payment of $125,000 a year to pay for crossing guards at the four elementary schools. The 19-page agreement, which is posted on the board meeting agenda, provides for public access to school grounds facilities during specific times. For example, the agreement dictates that, “The District shall make available year-round on Saturdays and Sundays its outdoor athletic fields and play yards at the five school sites for use by the community… the District shall ensure that access to the outdoor facilities is provided between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.” The five school sites are El Rodeo School, Hawthorne School, Horace Mann School, Beverly Vista School and Beverly Hills High School. The district must also provide public access to school facilities on weekdays during summer, spring or winter recess from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., provided the city gives BHUSD at least 30 days notice. The five school libraries are to be made available to resident children for a minimum of three hours a week after the school day ends, according to the JPA. Local Democratic Club Controversially Backs Osborn for State Assembly

January 9, 2012

Political veteran Torie Osborn on Sunday received the endorsement of the Malibu Democratic Club in the campaign for the newly created 50th Assembly District , which includes Beverly Hills. Opponent Betsy Butler , who currently represents another district in the Assembly, said Osborn gained the backing unfairly because her campaign recruited people to join the club so they could vote for her. Club members made the selection at Malibu City Hall following a one-hour forum, which was the first of the campaign featuring the three Democratic candidates. Republican hopeful Brad Torgan was not invited to the event. Osborn received 42 votes. Thirteen favored making no endorsement, five selected Butler and nobody backed Santa Monica Mayor/California Coastal Commissioner Richard Bloom . “I’m over the moon,” Osborn said in an interview with Patch after receiving the endorsement. “It’s my first one [from a local Democratic club]. I was decisive and it feels like a dry run for the whole campaign.” She said she was not involved in recruiting club members, but admitted her campaign “organized some people to either re-up [their memberships] or join.” “It’s a pretty common practice to use the candidates forums to do recruitment drives,” Osborn said. Butler said she heard Osborn got 42 people to join the club prior to the deadline to be an eligible voter—which was 30 days before the event—and that one person paid for the memberships with a single check.  Club President Jean Goodman wrote in an email to Patch, “We received a $1,000 contribution for payment of dues for a group of Torie Osborn supporters [with each membership costing $25] …  as to the name of the contributor, we will disclose that in our next report to the Secretary of State.” Malibu City Councilwoman Pamela Conley Ulich said the club voting rules prevented several Malibu residents from being able to participate. She said they were not aware they had to pay the membership fee 30 days prior to the session. When Conley Ulich asked people to raise their hands if they were Malibu residents, only about half the attendees did it. Bloom said he was not bothered about receiving zero votes. “This was an accurate reflection of who was in the room,” Bloom said when asked about the meaning of the results. Bloom noted a study done by the polling and research firm Lauer Johnson Research, which was hired by his campaign, that determined he had the most support and name recognition in the district. He said he was also not concerned that Osborn and Butler have received most of the prominent endorsements. “I think they’ve spent more time in the endorsement process,” Bloom said. “I’m really happy with the endorsements I have. But I’m very focused with running for office and doing my job as the mayor of Santa Monica. So I’m focusing in on the core responsibility of campaigning, and that’s reaching out to voters and the people who are ultimately going to be casting those ballots.” The three candidates are liberal Democrats, so there was little disagreement on major issues that were discussed during the forum. They all said education spending should be a priority. Osborn and Butler said they oppose the death penalty. Bloom said he only supports it in “exceptional cases,” including “mass murder where there is an admission and the evidence is crystal clear.” The next forum, hosted by the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club, will take place Jan. 15 from 2-4 p.m. at the Palisades Woman’s Club. The Santa Monica Democratic Club will host a forum Jan. 17 from 6:30-9 p.m. at Santa Monica’s main library. Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on  Twitter  and “Like” us on  Facebook .
