Real Simple magazine has dubbed this week Be Nice on the Internet Week . I like it. I’m in. Not that I’m not nice on the Internet. I am. I’m very nice. In fact, I am way nicer on the Internet than I am in real life. Seriously. Ask my kids. Perhaps it is because I have worked in a Web world for the last four years that I am so cognizant of the importance of proper comportment online. Since I spend a great deal of my time watching what others are saying on the Web, I am hyper-aware of my own behavior. At least I hope I am. Real Simple decided to go this route after doing a survey about social media behavior for its annual January “be a better person” issue. The results of the survey are fascinating and the editors wrote that “we’ll explore the psychological impact of Net negativity … Visit realsimple.com/beniceweek for full details and pledge with us to think before you post.” Now, Real Simple is focused on social media, like Facebook, where there is certainly well-documented cases of cyber-bullying that have gone so far as to end in suicide. To me, this idea of “think before you post” needs to be extended to everyone online, as even news sites have morphed into the area of social media with their comment platforms. And sometimes, it can get ugly. When I worked at theday.com as breaking news editor, a large part of my job was moderating comments. And because I had full view of the back of the house, I knew who many of the anonymous commenters really were. And I was occasionally shocked to find that the worst offenders in the comments—those who posted insults, attacks, made fun of others and were generally big jerks—were in their offline life leaders in the community. Anonymity gives many people courage—it’s like having one-too-many drinks at the bar and suddenly thinking you can take on the world. But even some of those who use their real names online go past the line of good manners and good debate. I wonder if it is because they are sitting in front of their computers, which also gives one the feeling that you are not really “talking” to others, you are simply typing. Patch is a news provider, but a major part of its mission and philosophy is to be a community platform—a gathering place where the free exchange of ideas and issues can help people figure out solutions and make changes for the better. A major component of Patch is the community’s ability to contribute through comments, adding photos or videos, posting announcements and events, and writing letters to the editor. I love Patch’s terms of use , which every reader agrees to when registering: Communities thrive when people care about each other, and as such, Patch expects all of its users to be respectful of others. … While we encourage people to be honest and post what’s on their mind, there are some types of Content that we simply can’t allow on Patch. … You might boil it down to three main policies: “Keep it clean,” “Don’t try to trick people,” and “Treat others as you’d like to be treated.” Easy, right? Not as easy as it sounds, based on some of the experiences we’ve had. But the in-the-now aspect of news coverage on Patch, and online in general, is what draws me to this latest incarnation of journalism—the fact that we are no longer all sitting alone in our kitchens, reading the news and talking to our pets about how we feel about what’s happening. Instead, we are reading the news and are able to state our opinions and add our two cents immediately—and share it with the world. And the world can answer back. Fabulous. I always think about posting online this way: Would I say it in front of my mother? Would I say it in front of my kids? Would I want someone to say it to my face exactly like this? How to Craft a Turkey for the Thanksgiving Table
Thanksgiving is an opportunity to stuff our bellies, watch football and spend time with family. It’s also a time to give thanks and be grateful. And what better way to help your kids remember why they are thankful than by taking the time to craft a Pine Cone Turkey together? This cute little guy can be assembled simply with gifts from nature and items you likely already have at home. Take your children on a walk to collect pine cones and seed pods—perhaps at Coldwater Canyon Park —then watch their creativity shine as they assemble their turkeys. We guarantee your kids’ faces will light up with pride when they see their creation on the Thanksgiving dinner table. Below you will find a list of essential items required to construct your Pine Cone Turkey, and tips and tricks that will help you along the way. The accompanying photos will walk you through the process step-by-step. Have fun! Essential Items: pine cones—for the turkey’s body seed pods—for the turkey’s head (we used seed pods from a Sycamore tree, but those from any tree would work) colored cardstock googley eyes markers (we like Zig Pens since they offer a fine and thick tip) pipe cleaners feathers (optional) white glue hot glue gun Tips & Tricks: If your children are young, be sure to cut out all feathers and beaks before sitting down to work on your turkeys. Little ones have short attention spans, so you want to make sure you can work as quickly as possible. Gather all of the essential items in advance in a shoe box, basket or large Tupperware container. This way you will have everything you need at your fingertips. Line your workspace with paper for easy clean-up and to avoid damaging furniture or floors. You can use craft glue entirely and in place of hot glue; however, drying time will take much longer and items will not stick as well to the pine cone and seed pod. When cutting out the beak, we found it is easiest to fold the cardstock in half first , then cut out a shape equivalent to a half of a triangle. This way the crease is sharp and even. Scissors can cut pipe cleaners, but be aware the wire can damage the blades. We suggest using a cable or wire cutter if available. Feathers may slip if the turkey is moved often. Apples, Asian Pears and Jujubes
A few quintessential autumn items have just come into season at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market . “This is definitely the time when our orchard gets to shine,” Leyla Coben of Ha’s Apple Orchard said. Ha’s Apple Orchard is a certified organic farm located in Tehachapi. It’s owned and operated by David Ha and his wife, Kyung, who were both pioneers in the early days of the California farmers market movement when it started more than 25 years ago. “We have apples year-round, but this time of year the apples are fresh-picked from the tree,” Coben said. Apples are harvested in the autumn months, but for the rest of the year they are pulled from cold storage. In general, apples have a long shelf life. When properly stored in ideal temperature and humidity conditions, they will keep for months. Ha’s Apple Orchard grows a variety of apple varieties such as Fiji, Gala and Granny Smith. Throughout the year, it also harvests plums, grapes, melons and berries. The farm offers these fruits fresh, dried or as jams and jellies. All of the packaged items are made without added sugar and yeast, and are unpasteurized so you get a spread of pure, 100 percent naturally flavored fruit on your toast. You can also buy apple cider vinegar at the stand, which is a popular ingredient for many fall and winter holiday recipes. “October is also when we start to pick our Asian pears and jujubes,” Coben said. Asian pears have a unique watery texture and soft flavor. They make for an excellent addition to tossed salads. As for jujubes, the fruit has been growing for more than 4,000 years in China, where it is called the “fruit of life” because of the many health benefits associated with it. “Jujube fruit is very good for improving circulation and lowering cholesterol,” Coben said. When the jujube fruit is eaten at its unripe stage, it has the crunchy texture of an apple. As the fruit ripens, it’s similar to a date—softening and becoming intensely sweet. But Ha’s isn’t the only provider of apples at the market. Stop by Fair Hills Farms for a selection of apples from its organic Paso Robles farm. “Our Gala apples are the first to come into season,” said Candi Loureiro, who operates the Fair Hills Farm stand. In the coming weeks, Fair Hills will have Fuji and the boutique Honey Crisp variety, a small, light pink, crisp-skinned apple with a juicy flesh. Next Week at the Market: Kid Zone with Poy Rides and Petting Zoo returns as well as Cookin’ Kids, during which children prepare recipes using ingredients from the market. Live entertainment will be provided by Christy Schmidt in the café area. The Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday (rain or shine) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 9300 block of Civic Center Drive. There are more than 60 farmers and vendors offering a wide variety of organic and conventional California-grown seasonal fruits and vegetables. There are also prepared food kitchens with menu items to take out or enjoy at the small on-site cafe. Parking is available on the neighboring side streets or in the garage attached to the City Hall and library. The market supplies free shopping carts to use and they are located there.
