Library Honors Volunteers at Thank You Luncheon
Those who donate their time to the Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library were honored last week at the group’s annual volunteer thank you luncheon. Friends President Charlotte Hill-Skura welcomed volunteers and board members, as well as Mayor Barry Brucker, Councilman, John Mirisch, City Manager Jeff Kolin, Director of Community Services Steve Zoet and Human Services Administrator Jim Latta. Marketing Supervisor Ellen Prager represented Whole Foods Beverly Hills , which has contributed to Friends through its “Community 5% Days” program. The Beverly Hills High School Madrigals were on hand to entertain at the luncheon. Hunt-Coffey praised the Friends, adding that all monies raised by the bookstore and membership drives go dollar-for-dollar to programs, including the Friends Reading Group facilitated by Judith Palarz. Assistant Director of Community Services Nancy Hunt-Coffey also commended the City Council for its recent approval of funding for library renovations and an expansion of the children’s area. It was, however, not all was good news at the event. Hunt-Coffey said that the library lost $175,000 due to recent state budget cuts—with the adult literary program losing $55,000. 5-Car Accident Takes Place in City Parking Facility
The driver of an Audi station wagon is alleged to have caused a chain-reaction car accident at about 4 p.m. Saturday in the city-owned parking lot at 439 N. Canon Drive. One witness, who asked to remain anonymous, reported to the Beverly Hills Police Department that he saw the Audi’s female driver “come flying down the exit” to the second underground level of the parking structure. The Audi then turned left, against traffic arrows, and slammed into two parked cars that then hit two other parked vehicles. “I’ve been a police officer for 21 years and I have never seen a car accident like this—two floors down in a [subterranean] garage,” BHPD Officer Don Chase said. One passenger was in the Audi with the driver during the accident. There were no passengers inside the four parked vehicles that were involved in the crash—a Mercedes SUV, a BMW sedan, a Mercedes station wagon and a BMW SUV. The Audi’s front airbags were deployed. The driver was overheard saying that she believed her brakes had failed. Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on Twitter and “Like” us on Facebook . Barry Bonds Sentenced to House Arrest in Beverly Hills Home, Avoids Prison
A federal judge sentenced Barry Bonds Friday to 30 days’ confinement in his Beverly Hills home, probation and community service, but the sentence was put on hold pending an appeal of Bonds’ felony obstruction of justice conviction, according to the Los Angeles Times . The Dec. 16 sentence came after Bonds was convicted in April on one count of obstruction of justice for his 2003 grand jury testimony regarding an investigation of BALCO, the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative that was selling banned steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs to the nation’s top athletes. A 14-time MLB All Star, Bonds also faced several counts of perjury but was not convicted on those charges. Sports Illustrated describes Bonds’ home as a “six-bedroom, 10-bathroom Beverly Hills estate” in the 90210 ZIP code valued at $10.6 million.
