Which California Lawmakers Are Part Of The One Percent?
This article comes to us courtesy of California Watch By Will Evans The Occupy Wall Street movement has focused the national discourse on wealth inequality and, specifically, the split between the richest 1 percent and the 99 percent that’s left. While most Californians, by definition, are not members of the wealthiest 1 percent, it turns out that many of us are represented in Congress by those who have attained that elite status. The cutoff for the top 1 percent of American households, in terms of net worth, is about $9 million, according to New York University economics professor Edward Wolff. His estimate is based on the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances, which put the figure at $8.2 million in 2007, he said. That puts many members of Congress squarely within the 1 percent, including prominent members of California’s delegation, such as Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein; Rep. Nancy Pelosi, also a Democrat; and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, a Republican. Exact numbers are hard to come by because politicians report their wealth within wide ranges. A real estate asset, for example, might be worth somewhere between $5 million and $25 million. The Center for Responsive Politics compiled the numbers from 2009 as a range between minimum and maximum wealth. Issa, worth between $156 million and $451 million, is California’s wealthiest representative in Washington, based on the center’s 2009 statistics. Issa doesn’t appear to be an Occupy supporter, calling for an investigation into whether union members’ money was inappropriately funneled to fund the protesters. An Issa spokesman did not respond to questions. Feinstein is next, with between $46 million and $108 million. Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, on the other hand, doesn’t make the 1 percent cut, with assets between $1.2 million and $5.6 million. A Feinstein representative pointed out that she supported President Barack Obama’s jobs bill, which included increased taxes on the wealthy. âThis would have been paid for by asking Americaâs millionaires and billionaires â those who have benefited from this economy while so many others have suffered â to contribute a little more,” Feinstein said after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the bill. GOP Rep. Gary Miller, who sits on the committee overseeing the banking industry, is worth between $19 million and $84 million. Pelosi reported a lot of liabilities, so her total is somewhere between negative $7 million and a maximum of $124 million, for an average of $58 million. Pelosi, however, has been supportive of the Occupy Wall Street movement. “I support the message to the establishment, whether it’s Wall Street or the political establishment and the rest, that change has to happen,” she said on ABC’s “This Week.” Story continues below. The Occupy protest in Cesar Chavez Park in downtown Sacramento is marked by a collection of signs that read, “We are the 99 percent.” But exactly who makes up that percentage seems to be more of an idea than an actual number to some protesters. A woman at an information table at the small protest said there are no rich people in the 99 percent. “The 99 percent are the ones that are low income, and they get taxed more than anyone else,” said Mary, who declined to give her last name. Another protester, Kevin Carter, said only billionaires â of which there are none in Congress â should qualify for the 1 percent. “Millionaires are fine â theyâre part of the 99 percent,” said Carter, 51. “Our challenge is to get the millionaires to understand this is not about class warfare.” Carter said he’s less concerned that politicians are wealthy than that they’re swayed by corporate lobbyists. Derek Cressman, Common Cause’s Western states regional director, said the extreme wealth of many politicians puts them out of touch with regular people. The influence of the wealthy, he said, has led to “policies that have really made the 1 percent dramatically better off and left 99 percent of us behind.” “If we want a government of the people and by the people … youâd want 99 percent of the members of Congress coming from the 99 percent of society that’s not worth $9 million,” he said. Some wealthy politicians, like the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, do stick up for the poor, Cressman said. But in a representative democracy, he said, “the 99 percent should be represented ourselves, rather than counting on the charity or benevolent sympathies of the 1 percent.” Members of Congress are out of touch because they are powerful professional politicians, not because they’re rich, said Michael Tanner, senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute. The emphasis on the richest 1 percent can be harmful because it targets people who are successful but haven’t done anything wrong, he said. “I think that corporate welfare is obscene, but I donât think the existence of inequality and wealth is simply a bad thing,” he said. “There’s people who got rich because they worked hard or gave us something that we really want.” Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs is a lot different from admitted fraudster Bernard Madoff, Tanner said. “Steve Jobs did more to make us better off than a lot of social workers,” Tanner said. “I donât care that he got rich â I got an iPad.” Table 1: Members of California’s congressional delegation with average net worth above $9 million, from 2009 Source: Center for Responsive Politics Table 2: All members of Congress with average net worth above $9 million, from 2009 Source: Center for Responsive Politics Will Evans is an investigative reporter for California Watch, a project of the non-profit Center for Investigative reporting. Gregory Linton: Come Participate in Mr. Brainwash’s ‘Art Show 2011′
Mr. Brainwash is excited to announce his biggest and most ambitious exhibition to date entitled Art Show 2011.  Not only is Mr. Brainwash putting on an art show, he is inviting any and all artists to come and participate in the event as a community art project. â¨Â â¨Since M&F is the voice of LA’s street art community, Mr. Brainwash extended a special offer to the followers and supporters of the blog by offering an exclusive first chance to put art on the walls this past Sunday. There was a huge turnout opening day with everything from five year olds to 60-year-old grandmothers, and first time artists to seasoned street art veterans. Here is a sampling of the great shots and amazing stories we captured from first day of Mr. Brainwash’s ‘Art Show 2011.’ If you want to be part of Mr. Brainwash’s ‘Art Show 2011.’ it is not too late. Due to the extreme popularity of the event, Mr. Brainwash has extended the hours, and the space will be open one final day, Sunday, October 16th from 11AM-10PM, so come share your art! AMK – LA based stencil artist AMK applied his signature spiders all over Mr. Brainwash’s ‘Art Show 2011′ and maintainted a stealthy look all the while. More HERE . Art Queen – One of the most compelling stories of the day was the 60 year old ‘Art Queen’ who has long been a fan and photographer of street art, but became inspired to create her first street art as part of ‘Art Show 2011′. She said that this is a secret side of her that most of her family and friends don’t know about. More HERE . Family Affair – ‘Art Show 2011′ is a family affair. Here are shots of a happy family supporting Dad as he places a piece on the wall and then all the cheerful members posing for a family portrait. More HERE . Highway Art – This was probably the most striking story of the day. This family lives in Reno, Nevada. But when the father heard about the opportunity to be part of Mr. Brainwash’s ‘Art Show 2011,’ he and his son hopped in the car and drove straight to the gallery. The piece is called Highway Art because it was created along the way, with collaborations ranging from truck drivers to Mr. Brainwash. More HERE . Inept – One of our favorite pieces of the day was this Star Wars-themed family portrait from street artist Inept. More HERE . LOUDLABS – The LOUDLABS crew affixing an actual canvas, not a wheat paste, to the wall inside ‘Art Show 2011′. Dig the OG Apple throwback color scheme. More HERE . Teacher – Teacher has earned a name as one of LA’s top street artists. His pieces are almost always hand-painted or printed from a hand painted piece. The art pieces aren’t just aesthetically pleasing (although they are that), each one also comes packing a socially relevant message. Add that to the fact that Teacher is rolling out fresh new imagery and messages every week. And top it off with Teacher’s continually hitting some of the biggest, highest, hottest spots in town, and it becomes clear why Teacher has earned this street cred. And the best part is that Teacher is a great guy in person. He really is a nice, positive person, and like his tattoos say, Teacher really strives to ‘Be The Change You Want To See’ in the world. Westboro Baptist Church Invades California
Westboro Baptist Church members and supporters are invading California to picket and protest the Steve Jobs funeral. One of the criticisms by the Westboro Baptist Church of the late Steve Jobs is that the Apple founder had a huge platform in front of the world which he utilized to served himself and not God. As a professional woodworker, was Jesus expected to carve a cross or Christian fish symbol into every product he made for his clients?
Apples, Asian Pears and Jujubes
A few quintessential autumn items have just come into season at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market . “This is definitely the time when our orchard gets to shine,” Leyla Coben of Ha’s Apple Orchard said. Ha’s Apple Orchard is a certified organic farm located in Tehachapi. It’s owned and operated by David Ha and his wife, Kyung, who were both pioneers in the early days of the California farmers market movement when it started more than 25 years ago. “We have apples year-round, but this time of year the apples are fresh-picked from the tree,” Coben said. Apples are harvested in the autumn months, but for the rest of the year they are pulled from cold storage. In general, apples have a long shelf life. When properly stored in ideal temperature and humidity conditions, they will keep for months. Ha’s Apple Orchard grows a variety of apple varieties such as Fiji, Gala and Granny Smith. Throughout the year, it also harvests plums, grapes, melons and berries. The farm offers these fruits fresh, dried or as jams and jellies. All of the packaged items are made without added sugar and yeast, and are unpasteurized so you get a spread of pure, 100 percent naturally flavored fruit on your toast. You can also buy apple cider vinegar at the stand, which is a popular ingredient for many fall and winter holiday recipes. “October is also when we start to pick our Asian pears and jujubes,” Coben said. Asian pears have a unique watery texture and soft flavor. They make for an excellent addition to tossed salads. As for jujubes, the fruit has been growing for more than 4,000 years in China, where it is called the “fruit of life” because of the many health benefits associated with it. “Jujube fruit is very good for improving circulation and lowering cholesterol,” Coben said. When the jujube fruit is eaten at its unripe stage, it has the crunchy texture of an apple. As the fruit ripens, it’s similar to a date—softening and becoming intensely sweet. But Ha’s isn’t the only provider of apples at the market. Stop by Fair Hills Farms for a selection of apples from its organic Paso Robles farm. “Our Gala apples are the first to come into season,” said Candi Loureiro, who operates the Fair Hills Farm stand. In the coming weeks, Fair Hills will have Fuji and the boutique Honey Crisp variety, a small, light pink, crisp-skinned apple with a juicy flesh. Next Week at the Market: Kid Zone with Poy Rides and Petting Zoo returns as well as Cookin’ Kids, during which children prepare recipes using ingredients from the market. Live entertainment will be provided by Christy Schmidt in the café area. The Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday (rain or shine) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 9300 block of Civic Center Drive. There are more than 60 farmers and vendors offering a wide variety of organic and conventional California-grown seasonal fruits and vegetables. There are also prepared food kitchens with menu items to take out or enjoy at the small on-site cafe. Parking is available on the neighboring side streets or in the garage attached to the City Hall and library. The market supplies free shopping carts to use and they are located there.
