Los Angeles police detectives are searching for the killer of a man whose remains were found in Bronson Canyon Park near the Hollywood sign earlier this week. The victim has been identified as Hervey Medellin, 66, according to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office. A former Mexicana Airlines employee, Medellin had left the company and lived in the Hollywood area for some time, according to media reports. Medellin’s head was found at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 3200 block of Canyon Drive. A pair of dog walkers discovered the head after it fell out of a plastic bag that two of their dogs were playing with. Authorities located Medellin’s hands and feet while searching the area Wednesday. They do not believe the body parts had been there long. An earlier theory that the case was connected to the discovery of a human torso in Arizona has been discounted. Investigators had estimated that the victim was between 40 and 60 years old. The head reportedly had gray hair. The search for more body parts continued Thursday but no other human remains were found. By Friday the park was reopened to the public. Police said a search warrant was served at a Hollywood apartment Thursday in connection with the case. No one has been arrested, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Richard French said. At least one person has been questioned and detectives are looking to talk to at least one other man, according to media reports. “Detectives are continuing to make investigative progress on the case, and will release more details and developments when they can,” French said. This Beverly Hills Police Department blotter set shows that even getting caught in the act won’t stop some thieves from following through with their crimes. Check the garage Sometime between the evening of Dec. 2 and the morning of Dec. 5, building materials were stolen from an underground garage on the 900 block of North Alpine Drive. A loss of $1,500 was reported. Through the window Between 5:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, property was stolen from a residence on the 300 block of South Crescent Drive. Someone pried open a rear window to gain access to the home, took goods and fled. The victim reported a loss of $2,200. Deconstructed During the night of Dec. 5, a residential construction site was burglarized on the 300 block of North Maple Drive. Someone entered the secured rear gate of the site, accessed the unsecured rear door of the home, removed $18,000 worth of material and fled. Whack Shortly before midnight on Dec. 8, an assault occurred on the 9400 block of West Olympic Boulevard. Someone threw a bag containing a hard object at another person’s face and mouth. Busted lock During the night of Dec. 8, items were stolen from a storage unit on the 700 block of North Alta Drive. Someone broke the chain lock to the gate securing the unit, removed property valued at $5,300 and fled. Bike grab At 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 9, someone was caught stealing a bicycle on the 9600 block of West Olympic Boulevard. A witness observed a man described as being 35 years old, 5-feet 8-inches tall, weighing 135 pounds with black hair exiting an open garage with the bike. Cold nights don’t stop burglars from taking to the streets in Beverly Hills. Builder’s bummer Sometime between Oct. 28-31, someone burglarized a secure residential construction site on the 700 block of North Alta Drive. Equipment, lighting and tools were stolen. A loss of $7,770 was reported. Big break-in Shortly after midnight on Oct. 31, a store was burglarized on the 400 block of North Rodeo Drive. A male suspect used an unknown object to smash open the front window to gain entry. The victim reported a loss of $91,925. Stolen merchandise At about 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, someone stole from an open business on the 9800 block of West Olympic Boulevard. Described as a 60-year-old male, 5-feet 8-inches tall, weighing 175 pounds with black hair, the suspect entered the location, took property and fled. A loss of $2,400 was reported. Four-on-one At 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, a robbery occurred on the 100 block of North Oakhurst Drive. Four men used physical force to restrain the victim on the ground, took the victim’s personal property and then fled. A loss of $950 was reported. Wrong haircut Between 8-10 p.m. on Nov. 1, someone was accosted on the 9900 block of North Santa Monica Boulevard. The suspect—described as being a 30-year-old male, 170 pounds and bald— offered the victim a free haircut, then made unwanted sexual advances toward the victim in a locked bathroom. It’s in the bag Between 3-3:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, someone stole merchandise from a store on the 400 block of North Bedford Drive. The suspect entered the business carrying a plastic bag, collected and concealed items inside the bag and then exited without paying. A loss of $108 was reported. Bikeless Between 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 1 p.m. on Nov. 3, two bicycles were stolen from the 200 block of South Gale Drive. Someone cut the cable locks that were securing the bikes. City Firefighters Offer Tips on Disaster Preparedness
The Beverly Hills Firemen’s Association represents the city’s 77 full-time, professional firefighters and paramedics. The organization operates three stations 24-hours a day and responds to more than 6,000 incidents a year. The group would like to share the following safety tips with residents in an effort to help our community protect itself in case of an emergency: Discuss what to do in an evacuation. When told by officials, go immediately to a shelter as instructed or to the home of a friend or relative who lives out of the area. Find out about your local shelters beforehand. Know evacuation routes. Pre-establish several different routes in case certain roads are blocked or closed. Family members can become separated during an emergency. Be prepared by creating a plan for how to reach one another. Establish an out-of-area contact (such as a relative or friend) who can coordinate family members’ locations and information should you become separated. Make sure children learn the phone numbers and addresses, and know the emergency plans. Quiz children every six months so they remember what to do, where to go and whom to call in an emergency. Decide how to take care of pets. Pets are not allowed in places where food is served, so you will need to have a place to take your pets if you have to go to a shelter. Post emergency phone numbers (fire, police, ambulance, etc.) by the phone. Assemble a family disaster supplies kit that includes water, non-perishable food items, medical supplies and a flashlight, and keep a smaller one in the trunk of your vehicle.
