Oakland Mayor Warns Port Shutdowns Will Be Hard To Prevent
OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland Mayor Jean Quan says the city would try to prevent future shutdowns at the port if port officials picked up the $1.5 million tab for the hundreds of police officers that would be needed. Quan also told the Chronicle that the city would probably not be able to prevent port closures anyway since a handful of protesters could sneak around police lines. Anti-Wall Street protesters blocked longshoremen from reporting to work for nearly 24 hours on Dec 12, shutting down much of the port. Police mostly stood back during the demonstration. Memorial 5K to Honor Drunk Driving Victim
A memorial 5K run/walk will take place Dec. 3 in memory of Beverly Hills High School student Vahagn Setian , who was killed in a 2006 car crash. The driver of the car in which Setian was riding, actor Lane Garrison, later pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and two other alcohol-related charges. “This is an event where our community and the police can come together to remember someone very dear to many—and celebrate life,” Vahagn’s father Karén Setian said in an email to Patch. The first-time 5K run/walk, which is being organized by the nonprofit Vahagn Setian Charitable Foundation and Beverly Hills Police Department , is taking place on the fifth anniversary of Vahagn’s death. “From the day of its creation, [the Vahagn Setian Charitable Foundation] has been involved with educating our youth of the consequences of their actions and encouraging them to make wise and healthy decisions,” Setian said. The gathering place before and after the walk, as well as the check-in booth, is at the “boat court” below the Beverly Hills police station in Civic Center Plaza. Participation is free of charge, but donations are welcome. At 8:30 a.m., members of the BHPD Baker to Vegas relay team will inaugurate the course. The run starts at North Rexford Drive and Park Way, heads east on Park Way, then north on North Oakhurst Drive to Cynthia Street, continuing north to Sunset Boulevard, then west on Sunset Boulevard and south on North Alpine Drive back to Park Way. The last runners will be allowed to start the course no later than 10:30 a.m. Event sponsors include Wells Fargo, The Peninsula of Beverly Hills, Tom Ford, M.
