Chris Hedges: The Business of Mass Incarceration – Chris Hedges’ Columns – Truthdig

July 29, 2013

Prisoners often work inside jails and prisons for nothing or at most earn a dollar an hour. The court system has been gutted to deny the poor adequate legal representation. Draconian drug laws send nonviolent offenders to jail for staggering periods of time. Our prisons routinely use solitary confinement, forms of humiliation and physical abuse to keep prisoners broken and compliant, methods that international human rights organizations have long defined as torture. Individuals and corporations that profit from prisons in the United States perpetuate a form of neoslavery. Chris Hedges: The Business of Mass Incarceration – Chris Hedges’ Columns – Truthdig

Tracy Bloom: Democrats Demand Answers From Obama, Warren Blasts Republicans, and More – Politics Today – Truthdig

March 13, 2013

Tracy Bloom: Democrats Demand Answers From Obama, Warren Blasts Republicans, and More – Politics Today – Truthdig : Now They Speak Up: A week after Republican Sen. Rand Paul temporarily filibustered CIA Director John Brennan’s confirmation vote over the Obama administration’s targeted killings program, Democratic lawmakers—who were conspicuously silent on the issue that day—are seeking details on the drone policy. In a letter sent to President Obama, eight Democrats asked him to declassify documents that justify the administration’s use of drone strikes. From the letter: “Authorizing the killing of American citizens and others has profound implications for our Constitution, the core values of our Nation, our national security and future international practice. The executive branch’s claim of authority to deprive citizens of life, and to do so without explaining the legal bases for doing so, sets a dangerous precedent and is a model of behavior that the United States would not want other nations to emulate.” (Read more)

EPA Bans Cruise Ships From Releasing Sewage Into Coastal Waters

February 10, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal environmental regulators have given final approval to a rule that bans cruise ships and large cargo vessels from releasing sewage into the ocean within three miles of California’s coast. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday that the new rule will strengthen existing state law which bans cruise ships from releasing a host of toxic pollutants into coastal waters. EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld said the rule bans all sewage discharges, treated or not, along California’s 1,624-mile coast and around major islands. Blumenfeld said the “no discharge zone” will prevent more than 20 million gallons of vessel sewage from entering the state’s coastal waters. The rules will cover cruise liners, which can hold 6,000 people at a time, and cargo vessels of 300 gross tons or more. View post: EPA Bans Cruise Ships From Releasing Sewage Into Coastal Waters
