How To Watch The Pasadena Rose Parade

February 3, 2012

The 2012 Rose Parade, which takes place on Monday, January 2nd in accordance with the “Never On A Sunday” tradition, steps off at 8am PST. Southern Californians who make the trek to watch the parade in person face traffic, limited parking and limited space along the 5.5 mile parade route — but that won’t stop the approximately 700,000 people who are expected to make it out there. The OC Register’s infographic guide to the Rose Parade notes that parking “is a nightmare,” but that savvy spectators would be wise to park on Pasadena streets starting at noon the day before the parade. The parade steps off on South Orange Grove Boulevard and Green Street and then marches east on Colorado Boulevard. The parade ends by turning north on Sierra Madre Boulevard and stopping at Villa Street. Check out a list of street closures related to the Rose Parade . The rest of us can watch live coverage of the events on KTLA (which is also doing a live feed online ), and East Coast viewers can catch it on local ABC and NBC stations from 11am to 1pm EST. National channels covering the parade include the Hallmark Channel, Home & Garden and Univision, according to the SF Examiner . As for those who are interested in this year’s unofficial float, Gigaom reports that Spencer Miller will be broadcasting Occupy The Rose Parade online. Details to be announced on Miller’s twitter feed . Leading the parade in its 123rd year is Grand Marshall J.R. Martinez, a military veteran turned inspirational speaker and actor (and the 2011 champion of Dancing With The Stars ). In a press conference on Friday , Martinez expressed both gratitude and disbelief about his role in the upcoming parade. “It’s really going to be amazing… I think that’s really going to hit me in an emotional way,” he said. “To think, here I am bringing in 2012 in such an unbelievable way.” Rose Queen Drew Washington also joins the parade, where she will appear with six rose princesses: Morgan Eliza Devaud, Stephanie Grace Hynes, Cynthia Megan Louie, Kimberly Victoria Ostiller, Hanan Bulto Worku and Sarah Nicole Zuno. Richard Jackson, president of the Tournament of Roses, praised this year’s royal court, saying, “We are so honored to have them as a part of our Tournament of Roses family. These beautiful, smart and poised young ladies have been and will continue to be excellent ambassadors of the Tournament of Roses.” Stay tuned to the Huffington Post for more coverage of the 2012 Rose Parade. Preparing For The Parade In the slideshow below, volunteers work on the Everybody Walk float, a caterpillar with a walking stick and compass. Organizers at EverybodyWalks.org want parade-goers to know the health benefits of walking: the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other diseases are decreased, and years can be added to a life with a regular walking routine. Matt Damon SLAMSs President Obama

February 2, 2012

Matt Damon, one of Barack Obama’s earliest supporters and once one of his most staunch advocates, slammed the President in the new issue of Elle Magazine . “I’ve talked to a lot of people who worked for Obama at the grassroots level. One of them said to me, ‘Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician,’” Damon tells the magazine . “You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of the country, much better.” Referring to the Occupy Wall Street movement, Damon continued: “If the Democrats think that they didn’t have a mandate — people are literally without any focus or leadership, just wandering out into the streets to yell right now because they are so pissed off … Imagine if they had a leader.” That echoes the President’s own words to Diane Sawyer in March of 2010 when he said, “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president… There’s a tendency in Washington to think that our job description, of elected officials, is to get reelected. That’s not our job description. Our job description is to solve problems and to help people.” The slam follows in the same vein as a number of other criticisms Damon has made of the President and the Democrats, including in March, when he criticized Obama’s education policy. “I really think he misinterpreted his mandate. A friend of mine said to me the other day, I thought it was a great line, ‘I no longer hope for audacity,’” Damon told CNN host Piers Morgan . “He’s doubled down on a lot of things, going back to education… the idea that we’re testing kids and we’re tying teachers salaries to how kids are performing on tests, that kind of mechanized thinking has nothing to do with higher order. We’re training them, not teaching them.” Later that month, he hit Obama on his handling of the economic crisis. “I think he’s rolled over to Wall Street completely. The economy has huge problems. We still have all these banks that are too big to fail. They’re bigger and making more money than ever. Unemployment at 10 percent? It’s terrible,” he told the Independent . Damon also criticized the President’s inability to get transformative things done, saying, “They had a chance that they don’t have any more to stand up for things. They’ve probably squandered that at this point. They’ll probably just make whatever deals they can to try to get elected again.” Currently, Obama and the Democrats are fighting with the House GOP over passing a compromise two month extension of the payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits, amongst other things; they’ve already removed increased taxes on the wealthy from the deal. Damon’s criticism rings with disappointment after he so publicly lent his support to the then-Senator Obama during the 2008 election. He spent time campaigning for the then-candidate at rallies , promoting him through a MoveOn video contest and attending fundraisers for the man who would become the 44th President . In August, the star ripped a cameraman and reporter from a conservative publication who challenged his stance on education at a Save Our Schools event in Washington, DC. He then moved on to economic policy criticism. “The wealthy are paying less than they paid at any time else, certainly in my lifetime, and probably in the last century,” Damon told a reporter at the same event . “I don’t know what we were paying in the roaring 20′s; it’s criminal that so little is asked of people who are getting so much. I don’t mind paying more. I really don’t mind paying more taxes. I’d rather pay for taxes than cut ‘Reading is Fundamental’ or Head Start or some of these programs that are really helping kids. This is the greatest country in the world; is it really that much worse if you pay 6% more in taxes? Give me a break. Look at what you get for it: you get to be American.” Speaking of the then-protracted negotiations over the debt ceiling, he did show some sympathy for Obama. “I’m so disgusted,” he said. “I mean, no, I don’t know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. So, my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot.” Scarlett Johansson, Damon’s co-star in the upcoming film “We Bought A Zoo,” recently said that she wanted Obama elected to another four year term . The President still enjoys support in Hollywood, having recently attended fundraisers in Los Angeles filled with stars. Obama responded jokingly to Damon’s criticism at his White House Press Correspondents Dinner in late April, saying, “It’s fair to say that when it comes to my presidency, the honeymoon is over … Matt Damon said he [has been] disappointed in my performance. Well Matt, I just saw the ‘Adjustment Bureau,’ so … right back atcha buddy.” Earlier this month, Damon said he found the dig, which referenced his poorly reviewed sci-fi action film that came out last winter, pretty funny . Week in Reviews : Maximiliano’s Italian-American Cuisine Earns 1.5 Stars

Week in Reviews : Maximiliano’s Italian-American Cuisine Earns 1.5 Stars

Today Sher dishes out a fairly straightforward one and a half star review of Andre Guerrero’s Maximiliano , backhanded compliments and all. She finds the restaurant charming and dependable, but nothing to write home about: …his tribute to “kinda old school” Italian-American cooking seems perfectly pitched for the area. Set in a loft-like space on the corner of York Boulevard and Aldama Street, the newcomer brings some big-city zing to Highland Park without being over-the-top trendy… Maximiliano has a warm, friendly vibe and cheerful decor, not to mention an accessible menu (with prices to match) and a good little wine and beer list. The restaurant is just what it’s supposed to be: a good place to eat …And though his Italian food is updated with svelte contemporary touches, Maximiliano isn’t really the kind of place you’d drive across town to visit . SIV recommends ordering one of the restaurant’s thin crust pizzas, “not the most flavorful in town but good,” or one of the “hearty and familiar” pasta dishes. Despite the mixed review, she concludes that Maximiliano’s is “[s]oon to become a fixture on York Boulevard.” [ LAT ] The Goldster checks in to the Westfield Culver City Food Court to taste test Five Guys, Kyochon, 101 Noodle Express, Panda Express, Viet Gourmet Express, Sarku Japan . [LAW] The Elsewhere: Caroline on Crack drinks at Ray’s and Stark Bar , e*star LA talks Cooks County , kevinEats at Post & Beam , Midtown Lunch checks out the new Mid-City Jinya , Refined Palate hits Farmshop , and Sinosoul talks about burgers at Stout and The Churchill . Renée Zellweger Lists Connecticut Country Crib

January 31, 2012
Renée Zellweger Lists Connecticut Country Crib

SELLER: Renée Zellweger LOCATION: Pomfret, CT PRICE: $1,500,000 SIZE: 3,400 square feet (approximately, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms YOUR MAMAS NOTES: While snacking on some dry toast backed up with a stiff, mid-day gin & tonic pick-me-up Your Mama received an unexpected press release that announces Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger has listed her rural retreat in puny and purdy Pomfret, CT on the market with an asking price of $1,500,000. Miz Zellweger has been a bright light in Tinseltown for quite some time and is best known perhaps for her roles in Cold Mountain, Jerry Maguire, Chicago, Nurse Betty and the Bridget Jones’s Diary franchise and for her long list of high-profile man-friends and who include Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Jack White, Kenny Chesney–to whom she was married for about 8 minutes–Luke Perry, John Krasinski, André Balazs, Dan Abrams and, for about 2 years until their March 2011 bust up, Bradley Cooper who People magazine named as “The Sexiest Man Alive” for 2011. Anyhoo, property records show the sinewy and squinty-eyed movie star procured her pastoral Pomfret property in November 2004 for $1,320,000. The press release we received reveals Miz Zellweger acquired the 39 acre farmlette, located in the northeastern corner of Connecticut about 3.5 hours by car from Midtown Manhattan, as a “vacation retreat.” She renovated, updated and upgraded the property’s primary structures, which include a vintage main house, separate guest house, and fully detached recreation barn while retaining respect and admiration for the age and integrity of the antique structures. The actress also spent handsomely on extensive landscaping improvement that include various gardens, terraces and dry-stone walls that look as if they pre-date the late-18th century spread. The main house, a quirky and humble but dignified Federal-style Colonial built around 1770, measures around 3,400 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms that include a commodious (if casual) master suite with vaulted ceiling with heavy, exposed rough-hewn beams, private en suite facility on a dressing area with, as per press release, “an extensive suite of closets.” Visibly aged and pleasantly worn wide plank wood floors–either original or reclaimed–spread throughout the main lounging and entertaining areas that spoke off around the center stair hall and include a cozy formal living room with fireplace and an army of 9-over-9 pane sash windows, a formal dining room with fireplace and antique crystal chandelier, and a ebony-paneled library also with fireplace plus floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcases. A fourth fireplace–this one with brick fireplace original built-in bread oven–warms the family room/media room and the well-equipped (and surprisingly over-sized) and natural light bright kitchen has custom white-painted cabinetry, butcher-block counter tops, high-grade commercial-style appliances, a massive center island lorded over by a heavy-duty pot rack laden with a cacophony of pots and pans that could easy ensnare a bouffant hair do and/or mentally incapacitate an elderly person if it were to fall unexpectedly from the white-painted wood-paneled ceiling. A sunny sun porch with pitched ceiling and original (or antique reclaimed) wide-plank wood floors looks out past the mature tree branches, through a mossy split-rail fence, down a gentle planted slope to a tree- and lawn-ringed amorphous swimming pool with wide flagstone coping. A separate guest house has a living room, bedroom, kitchenette and full bath while an antique barn located across the large gravel motor court from the main house has been re-purposed into an airy entertainment pavilion with soaring exposed wood vaulted ceiling, hardwood floors, a old-timey (but probably new-fanged) wood stove and hefty, rough-hewn posts that anchor the massive antique timbers that cross the interior of the capacious space. The high-profile but low-key Miz Zellweger has owned a number of other prominent properties that include a secluded ranch-style residence in the Hollywood Hills she bought in March 2000 for $1,875,000 from The Wallflowers front man Jakob Dylan and sold a few years later when she snatched up a 6,410 square foot mansion in a plum section of Los Angeles’ hoity toity Bel Air ‘hood that she owned only briefly and sold in July 2003 for $7,000,000 to Will & Grace alum Debra Messing. Most recently she sold a pair of rambling apartments–or a trio of contiguous units, depending on how one counts, that comprise about 5,000 square feet in a grand Beaux Arts townhouse building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for a combined $7,950,000. As far as we know Miz Zellweger still owns a charming farmhouse in East Hampton, NY she acquired in April 2003 for $2,150,000. In early 2010 there were scads of rumors and reports Miz Zellweger and her then man-beau Bradley Cooper picked up a contemporary house in the Rustic Canyon area of Pacific Palisades but to be honest children, we don’t know anything about this house at this point…meaning it’s not clear if it was purchased by Miz Zellweger, Mister Cooper or if they bought it together, which we sort of doubt. We have no inside intel about whether or not Miz Zellweger plans to continue to lighten her real estate load or if she’ll hang on to her house in the Hamptons. listing photos: Coldwell Banker Previews International Read the original: Renée Zellweger Lists Connecticut Country Crib

Oprah Dedicated To Turning OWN Around

January 31, 2012

LOS ANGELES — Oprah Winfrey earned the rare opportunity to convert her media charisma into a monogramed TV channel. Now she’s the one tasked with rescuing OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, after a disappointing first year. It’s a high-stakes, potentially ego-shattering challenge that could make the strongest woman or man flinch. But win or lose, Winfrey says she relishes the fight to turn OWN’s fortunes around. “Yes, some mistakes were made. Who hasn’t made mistakes? The real beauty is you can say, `I learned from that,’” Winfrey said. “I don’t worry about failure. I worry about, `Did I do all I could do?’” The cable channel, which marks its first year Jan. 1, is trying for a fresh start after executive turnover and missteps that proved OWN lacked a solid foundation on which to build, this despite a Discovery Communications investment of a reported $250 million and counting. Viewers snubbed the lineup that skimped on programming and, surprisingly, what should have been OWN’s unique weapon of choice: Winfrey herself, whose limited on-air presence will be boosted Sunday with a new weekly series, “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” OWN has failed to improve on, or in some instances even match, the modest ratings and small audience earned by the low-profile Discovery Health channel it replaced. “I would absolutely say it is and was not where I want it to be for year one,” Winfrey said. “My focus up until (last) May was doing what I do best, which is `The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ and giving that my full attention” until its conclusion. But Winfrey, who said management team errors in planning and execution could serve as a cautionary tale (“I was never interested in writing a book. … THIS could be a book”), rejects the idea that a single year’s performance will determine OWN’s ultimate fate. Or hers. “Somebody was talking to me in that kind of saddened, `How are you?’ tone, and I was thinking, `I’m fine,’” said Winfrey, 57, who ruled as the queen of daytime TV until she ended her talk show after 25 years and turned her attention to the channel. “I realized the reason people have this tone is they’re reading all the press (about OWN), so you see me and wonder if I can still walk. … I am a determined and committed woman. I don’t give up. I’m just getting started,” she said in a recent interview. One bonus of being Oprah: She has received pep talks from other media movers and shakers. “Everybody has told me – Ted Turner has told me, Barry Diller has told me, Lorne Michaels has told me, David Geffen has told me – anybody who’s ever worked with a channel, who’s ever done anything, has said it takes three to five years,” she said, adding, “You have to do the work. … You do not have to pay attention to the criticism.” Year two for OWN will reflect executive changes made last July, when Winfrey expanded her role at the channel by adding the roles of chief executive and chief creative officer to her position as chairman. Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori had filled in as interim head after OWN CEO Christina Norman was dismissed in the wake of poor ratings. Although the channel’s ownership is split evenly between Discovery and Winfrey’s Chicago-based production company, Harpo Inc., it is Discovery’s money that’s on the line. With more scheduling consistency, movies, original series with and without Winfrey, and “a lot more Oprah in general,” Discovery is “a lot more confident that we’re heading in the right direction,” said company spokesman David Leavy. Sheri Salata and Erik Logan, two veteran Harpo executives, were brought on board to share the title of OWN president, with Logan moving from Chicago to OWN’s Los Angeles headquarters. Logan said he clearly understands the hard work in establishing any cable channel, and this one in particular. “One of the greatest gifts and challenges is to have her name on the door,” Logan said of his top boss. “Everything you do garners a high level of scrutiny and attention. … We don’t run from that.” The initially slight programming lineup is being beefed up, most notably with “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” The weekly series debuts 9 p.m.-11 p.m. EST Sunday with Winfrey’s visit to the New Hampshire home of Steven Tyler. “Next Chapter” turns the once studio-bound Winfrey into a globe-trotting interviewer who drops into the home of a Hasidic Jewish family in New York, George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in California and cook Paula Deen’s Georgia estate. There is also a trip with Sean Penn to Haiti, fire-walking with Tony Robbins and a planned India trip with Deepak Chopra. The injection of Winfrey on-screen, not just in the executive suite, is sorely needed, suggested one industry analyst. “The biggest mistake they made is, if it’s the Oprah Winfrey Network, where’s Oprah?” said Bill Carroll of media buying firm Katz Media. He compared OWN’s Winfrey vacuum to programming the Court TV channel without courtroom shows or the Major League Baseball channel without games: “After a while, viewers stop going,” Carroll said. OWN has averaged about 136,000 viewers a day, a drop of 8 percent from what Discovery Health drew in 2010, although it’s up slightly in total viewers in prime time and has seen an 8 percent increase among women ages 25 to 54, part of the channel’s hoped-for demographic. Popular shows include “The Judds,” which ran for six episodes in April and May; “Our America With Lisa Ling”; and the reality series “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s,” which attracted a strong African-American audience (prompting media reports that OWN intended to skew toward black viewers, an assertion that Discovery and Winfrey deny. “It doesn’t mean we’re going to turn into the `Roots’ channel,” Winfrey said, wryly.) Winfrey also is on-air with “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” which draws on her talk-show archives, and “Oprah’s Master Class,” a series of high-achiever biography specials. But, she said, she never “was supposed to carry the channel on my back, and it never was supposed to be about me being on the air as much as possible.” Instead, O magazine, with Winfrey as monthly cover girl and articles reflecting her better-life philosophy, is the intended model. She attributes the channel’s rough start to a more basic error: The lack of a “library” of programming for the many hours of airtime not filled by original shows, compounded by overconfidence about her market value in general. “I don’t understand what anybody was thinking. You’re going on the air, you’ve got four shows. What do you think you’re going to do by Tuesday? Did they think people were going to turn on the channel just because it had my name on it?” she said, sounding almost eager to cast doubt on her drawing power. “People didn’t turn on `The Oprah Winfrey Show’ because my name was on it. It was absolutely topic driven every day,” she said. Such modest expressions aside, Winfrey’s involvement clearly is key to the channel’s success. She’s glad to make the commitment, she said. As her longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham told her, she’d be bored silly today if she’d taken any lengthy break after ending her daytime show. Discovery is also in it for “the long term,” said spokesman Leavy, citing the three to five years that other cable channels have needed to develop audience-grabbing hits and firmly establish themselves. He declined to specify what Discovery has spent so far on the venture, calling media estimates high. But he pointed to long-term advertising contracts with major companies including Procter & Gamble, and hopes of new carriage fees from cable providers that have been airing the channel for free. Viewership that has been lower than expected, however, has meant “make goods” in ad time for sponsors. Winfrey, who describes herself as obsessed by ratings for the first time in her career, said she’s giving OWN “everything I’ve got. I’ve spent more energy doing this than anything I’ve ever done in my whole life.” With good reason. “I walked in today (to OWN’s offices) and felt uplifted to see my name on the door, Oprah Winfrey Network,” she said. “Just to … be able to sit in a room with a team of people presenting you with ideas – what a gift that is.” It has also made OWN her ultimate responsibility. “Every third week, someone new was in charge, and now she’s in charge. From where I sit, this is going to be her success or her failure,” said analyst Carroll. Winfrey claims to have an unlikely sounding Plan B if the channel falls short. “If this doesn’t work out, I’m going to go into organic farming in Maui. And I’m not kidding.” ___ Online: ___ EDITOR’S NOTE – Lynn Elber is a national television columnist for The Associated Press. She can be reached at lelber(at)ap.org. Here’s a little bit about Frazee: Patch:  As an advertising manager, what’s the best part of your job? Nicholas Frazee:  Meeting local residents and business owners, and impressing them with Patch. It’s always amazing either to hear the “I love Patch!” response, or see that great “Ah-hah!” look of discovery as I find new users. The best is when I get to say, “Hey, how about your family, where do they live? Let’s find their Patch and see what’s going on!” That might be my favorite.  Patch:  What’s the best way for people to contact you about advertising on Patch? Frazee :  In person is always best. As an ambassador for Patch, I’m always at chamber events and local happenings. However, Patch has kept its people well stocked with technology. I always have my iPhone with me: 310-721-5825; and email is great too: Nick.Frazee@Patch.com.  Patch:  What do you find special about Patch? Frazee :  Patch is more than anything a resource; a tremendous asset for a community to learn more about their news, events and businesses, and to contribute back. It’s a two-way conversation every day and I have been so excited watching it become a part of the fabric of people’s lives. Did you check your Patch today? Patch:  What are your personal interests? What are you looking forward to most in your new surroundings? Frazee :  My nickname at Patch is “Iceman” since I play hockey and ski. I can’t wait to take some long weekends to Utah! More than anything, I’m pschyed for the surf. This is the closest I’ve lived to the beach, and I’ve already hit up Venice Beach and Malibu.
