Another Smash+Grab Robbery in Jewelry District, Caught on Video

Los Angeles: Los Angeles detectives have released video of a brazen, daylight robbery downtown, in which three Black men in red hoodies rush into a jewelry store, pepper spray the owner and smash the display cases, taking over $7000 in costume jewelry. “We’ve been seeing these smash-and-grabs occurring for several weeks,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Central Detective Division. “As you can see in the video, the use of pepper spray has become a common tactic.” The robbery occurred at the 21st Century Jewelry store on June 22, must before 1 PM. Vernon warned. Detectives have noted a pattern of similar robberies across the southland. “We’ve have spoken to other agencies from Tustin to Corona to Inglewood,” Lt. Vernon added. Detectives …

Their trademark seems to be wearing black shirts with the word “security” written across the back. So far, detectives are aware of three robberies the suspects have committed. The first was last weekend on August 6 at about 8:20 pm at Bob’s Market, 1000 National Blvd. A surveillance video showed a suspect entering the store wearing a black ski mask and a black shirt with “security” written on the back in white letters. He was also wearing gloves and black pants and carrying a revolver handgun. While a cashier was helping another customer, he pointed his gun at the cashier, demanded money and then left the store, heading south on Hughes Avenue. A witness saw the suspect get into a parked car described as a black, four-door Honda driven by a second male suspect. The car was last seen heading south on Hughes Avenue. No description is available of the driver, but the first suspect is described as an 18- to 25-year-old Black male who stands about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs around 165 pounds.
