Violence against sex workers doesn’t exactly get the attention from law enforcement that it deserves. And because of stigma, zoning laws and lack of legal protection, both women and men involved in the business of sex face unnecessary risks in their daily lives. Because of all this, the local chapter of sex work advocacy group Sex Workers Outreach Project is holding an event on Saturday, December 17 more › Originally posted here: International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers: 12/17 @ City Hall

Occupy SF, LA To Move Indoors?
SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles and San Francisco are seeking long-term solutions to the entrenched encampments by anti-Wall Street protesters, hoping to end the drain on resources and the frayed nerves among police and politicians. Officials in both cities have considered providing protesters with indoor space that would allow the movement to carry out its work in more sanitary, less public facilities. Occupiers are debating among themselves about whether to hold their ground or try to take advantage of possible moves. Talks in both cities mark a distinctly different approach than tactics used elsewhere that have seen police sent in to dislodge Occupy camps. Violence and arrests plagued camps in Oakland and New York, while the use of batons and pepper spray against peaceful protesters on University of California campuses has led to national outrage and derision. San Francisco is negotiating with Occupy SF members about moving their encampment from the heart of the financial district to an empty school in the city’s hip Mission district. That would allow the occupiers to have access to toilets and a room for their daily meetings, while camping out in the parking lot of what was once a small high school. The move also could help them weed out drug addicts and drunks, and those not wholly committed to their cause. Protesters in Los Angeles said officials rescinded a similar deal, in which the city would have leased a 10,000-square-foot space that once housed a bookstore in Los Angeles Mall to the protesters for $1 a year. But after the proposal was made public at an Occupy LA general assembly, it generated outrage from some who saw it as a giveaway of public resources by a city struggling with financial problems, and the offer was withdrawn. Deputy Mayor Matt Szabo told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the encampment around City Hall would be shut down at some point next week. “The encampment as it exists is unsustainable,” Szabo said. Whether the city continues to negotiate with Occupy LA for a new location remains to be seen. Occupy LA camper Alifah Ali said she would pack up her tent at City Hall when the order to leave came down in Los Angeles and welcome the possibility of new digs. “Maybe we need to move,” Ali said. “Maybe this will give us room to organize, make our voice clear.” Los Angeles officials initially endorsed the movement and allowed tents to sprout on City Halls lawns. More than 480 tents have since been erected. But problems arose with sanitation, drug use and homeless people moving into the camp. In San Francisco, several hundred protesters have been hunkered down for some six weeks in about 100 tents at Justin Herman Plaza, at the eastern end of Market Street and across from the tourist-catching Ferry Building on the bay. The city has declared the plaza a public health nuisance, though city officials also credit the campers for their efforts to rid the camp of garbage and keep the grassy area clean. Mayor Ed Lee has met with the occupiers at several heated closed-door meetings at City Hall. He’s repeatedly told them he supports their cause and the right to protest the nation’s confounding inequality between the rich and the poor. But they cannot, he has said, continue to camp out overnight in a public plaza. “The mayor is being patient,” said Christine Falvey, a spokeswoman for Lee. “He wants to see some sort of long-term, sustainable plan because the city cannot sustain overnight camping for any long period of time.” Ken Cleaveland of the Building Owners and Managers Association of San Francisco, which represents the hotels and businesses that have been impacted by the noise, loss of tourism and concerns of violence, said some hotels had to reimburse guests who could not sleep, and small businesses in the tourist hub have lost thousands of dollars. “It’s time to move the camp,” he said. “Nobody’s disagreeing with their right to protest or the inequities in society that they are protesting, but it’s not a place to camp out permanently.” A survey by The Associated Press found that during the first two months of the nationwide Occupy protests, the movement that is demanding more out of the wealthiest Americans cost taxpayers at least $13 million in police overtime and other municipal services. Gentle Blythe, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco public school district, said city officials had approached the district about allowing Occupy SF to relocate to the Mission site that formerly housed Phoenix High School. The School Board is considering a facility permit that would allow the city to lease the property for six months. Occupy SF members say they’re mulling over the proposal. “We’re waiting for whatever caveats the city is going to come back at us with,” said Jerry Selness, a retired Navy medic from Eugene, Ore., who has volunteered for a more than a month at the Occupy SF medical tent. “I do feel that we’re at a crux point here: we are either going to give this movement enough time to be able to make our next move, which will be to not only to move this camp, but move to a new phase in the way that we occupy,” he said. There is debate among the occupiers in San Francisco as to whether it’s better to stay put, move to another long-term location or make quick hit-and-run occupies at symbolic sites such as bank lobbies and foreclosures auctions. “For instance, there’s a neighborhood in San Francisco right now where they’re foreclosing on 11 houses in one street,” Selness said. “What a perfect place for us to occupy.” — Hoag reported from Los Angeles Read more from the original source: Occupy SF, LA To Move Indoors?

Chris Brown Snag Sexy New Crib in Hollywood Hills
BUYER: Chris Brown LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA PRICE: $1,550,000 SIZE: 2,473 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Listen chickens, Your Mama wouldn’t know a Chris Brown ditty if it walked up, kicked us hard in the soft of our shin and called us a jive-talkin’ turkey. What little we know about the young R&B/pop musician comes exclusively from what we’ve read on the blogs and in the tabs and gossip glossies, which is to say, what we know ain’t not particularly flattering. We know he smacked (or otherwise assaulted) former gal pal Rihanna a few years ago and we know that more recently he’s worked the last nerves of at least a few of his neighbors at the 7-unit West Hollywood condo complex where in February 2011 he paid $1,600,000 for a penthouse pad with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. A few minutes research on the interweb turns up various and scads of stories about young Mister Brown (and/or his guests) parking their luxury automobiles in two of the building’s underground parking spots marked for use by handicapped folks. However, for the record, his big-name legal man Mark Geragos claims Mister Brown’s deed shows the two handicap parking spots belong to his penthouse and in September (2011) 95 of 117 pending parking tickets incurred by Mister Brown were dismissed after the a court determined the parking spaces were indeed assigned to Mister Brown’s penthouse. Mister Brown’s neighbors’ complaints do not, alas, end with the in-the-end not-illegal parking matters. They also say he and his entourage blast music at all hours of the day and night, race dogs in the building’s corridors–What?!?–and over the summer the po-po were summoned to the premises after it was reported someone carved the initials “C.B.” into the elevator doors. Mister Brown alleges it was one of his disgruntled neighbors who carved on the elevator doors in order to make him look bad. Could be. Stranger things have certainly happened. Whatever the case, Mister Brown was clearly not well liked by his neighbors and smartly opted to get out of Dodge, or out of West Hollywood anyways. The tatted-up 22-year old was widely reported to have vacated the premises in early November (2011) and in mid-November it was reported by Radar Online he’d “bought a swanky Hollywood Hills Mansion for a cool $1.5 million.” Your Mama would surely have looked right on past Mister Brown recent real estate activities–he’s not really in our orbit of interest–were it not for the rather surprising number of queries we’ve had about his new digs. It took us a day or two to get things sorted out but after a few queries, a couple of dead ends and a report on The Daily forwarded by Jezebel Justwantstoknow, Your Mama has ascertained that Mister Brown decamped to a fairly recently built and decidedly contemporary crib that clings dramatically to a precariously steep slope in a rugged (and quiet) ravine above Lake Hollywood in a neighborhood known as the Hollywood Dell. Yes, children, there is an actual (man-made) lake in Hollywood . Anyhoo, it’s not entirely clear to Your Mama if Mister Brown leased or purchased the hillside house in question but property records do indicate that a mysterious corporate entity did indeed acquire the residence in mid-October (2011) for $1,550,000. Whether he bought or rented–it does appear to Your Mama, who does not know a gnat from a violin, that he bought the sexed-up residence–Mister Brown’s ludicrously painted Lamborghini Gallardo was reported by The Daily to have been seen parked in the street-level two-car garage that has a clear glass door, which ain’t the best way to keep the prying eyes of anyone from identifying one’s easily identifiable whip, you know? The multi-level residence, designed by noted and accomplished L.A.-based architect Jay Vanos , sits high–very, very high–above the narrow and winding street. One old listing we dug up states that the top of the house soars more than 100 feet above the street, high enough to make someone with even a mild case of acrophobia to sweat like a sow and shriek with anxiety. The main portion of the house is accessible by either a butt-busting exterior staircase or private elevator that more easily whisks residents and guests up from the street level interior entry, past the separate guest quarters atop the garage to an exterior glass-railed bridge that spans a plunge-sized swimming pool and spa below and connects to the main entry to the glassy, multi-story main house. Inside there’s a double-height living room with towering walls of glass with canyon views, fireplace with flat-screen mounted above and ebony wood floors under foot. The living room is open to a sleek Boffi brand kitchen with charcoal-colored cabinetry and what looks to Your Mama like stainless steel counter tops but may very well be something else entirely. Above the kitchen there looks to be a lofted office/sitting room. The top level master suite, separated from the staircase by a glass wall that stretches from wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, is open completely open to the bathroom that includes a free-standing soaking tub, separate glassed-in shower stall, and long, double sink vanity. It’s all terribly sexy in that Miami hotel suite sort of way but we can imagine it could be awfully annoying for a couple who have different schedules and routines to have to listen and watch their partner do their morning and/or evening ablutions. The custom-designed house is, as per listing information we teased out of the internets, was designed with a green roof and is kitted and fitted with all the latest high-tech electronic gadgetry that includes a Crestron home automation system, state-of-the art audio and video security systems, and LED lighting displays throughout including in the swimming pool and jacuzzi that lights up like a damn disco at the flip of a switch. As far as we know and/or can tell, Mister Brown has yet to lease or list his West Hollywood penthouse although we don’t expect he’ll want to keep it since at least some of the other residents of the complex seem to loathe the entertainer with every fiber of their real estate beings. listing photos: Nicholas Property Group via Southern California Homes Originally posted here: Chris Brown Snag Sexy New Crib in Hollywood Hills
Jorge-Mario Cabrera: Dogs Bark Because We Gallop
Perhaps the late 18th century German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said it best when he wrote ” When the dogs bark we know we are riding on horseback “. This past week, the immigrant rights movement in the United States had its share of news that shook us to the core. It’s not easy to watch your own country descend to the brink of the abyss of intolerance, dislike of foreigners, and divisive rhetoric, and not react angrily or with uncontrollable sarcasm. In Alabama, California, and Massachusetts the seeds of discontent most likely sowed by corporate greed, lackadaisical oversight, and world economic disinterest in the middle and working class finally reaped resentment, distrust, and outright antagonism. The target of the collective rage nationwide: unauthorized immigrants. Divide and rule, the politician cries; unite and lead, is watchword of the wise. The Alabama known for its spring of social justice and civil liberties returned last week to the dark ages of vigilantism , inequality, and discrimination based on the color of skin, last name, ethnic origin, and now perceived immigration status. The Beason-Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act has little to do with the protection of Alabama’s citizens and it is definitely a result of the kind of political pandering and lynch-mob mentality that relish on letting loose rabid dogs in mad search of “the other”. Adeptly, Republicans in Alabama have used the community’s hunger for answers, whatever they may be, to pin the community against the wall and accept that only without immigrants can Alabama’s “Heart of Dixie” beat fastest. They couldn’t be so wrong. In a state where a child’s school registration can mean a deportation order for his/her parents, reason and justice is seem to have been thrown under the bus. By Friday, five per cent of the state’s student population (1,988 Latino students) had vanished, making true the wish of many in this angst-filled rural bastion, while signifying the darkening of the shadows for many others. The state of the great bus boycott and civil rights mobilization that shook the nation’s conscience, Alabama cannot forego its proud history of resistance, breaking the mold, and going its own way on important social issues. Alabama has been a beacon of adaptability, respect to hard work, and deference to tradition. Alabamians must unite and lead our nation wisely by exercising a strong measure of common sense and humanity and resist the temptation to blame and segregate immigrants living and working your midst. None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free. In Milford, MA, the stupidity of a drunken driver left an entire town mourning the untimely death of Matthew Denice and seeking payback by turning against the Ecuadorian community where loved ones of Nicolas D. Guaman lamented the unspeakable crime. Instead of bringing together both communities, the tragedy pitted immigrants against everyone else. In Milford, Ecuadorian immigrants have been greeted by their own neighbors and local officials with water bottles and tomatoes in a clear effort to drive every one of them out of Milford and the entire state of Massachusetts. Republicans smelled blood and in packs jumped at the chance to introduce anti-immigrant legislation they said has nothing to do with racism, immigrants, or Ecuadorians. Not wanting to seem weak, Democrats also joined in the cook fest and now are talking just as tough supporting calls by several MA sheriffs to bring back the ill-named “Secure Communities” program, a police-ICE collaboration scheme to identify unauthorized immigrants guilty of serious crimes. Individual acts of battery, vandalism, physical and verbal abuse , and vigilante-style patrolling in Milford leave much to be desired for a town so vibrant and rich in history. Political posturing in the form of laws that will ultimately prove unconstitutional and costly to all citizens in Massachusetts is but lynch-mob, knee-jerk reaction wrapped in a silk, white veil of self-preservation. There is no joy in neighbors treating neighbors as vermin. There is no peace when local officials racially profile entire neighborhoods looking to get someone in trouble. There is no honor in destroying one’s neighborhood, town and state one anti-immigrant insult at a time. First and last, what is demanded of genius is love of truth. In Los Angeles, California, a smoggy urban center has been turning toxic every afternoon on KFI 640AM radio for a little more than a decade. From 3 pm until 7 pm, just when Angelenos’ blood pressure raises to its highest level due to the insurmountable traffic, the John and Ken Radio Show ranks up the volume and gets to work on the hearts and minds of the disillusioned, dissatisfied, and unemployed. John and Ken’s fury is targeted at politicians in Sacramento and immigrants. These two thugs with a microphone sprinkle their daily program with taunts, jeers, and outright lies about the unauthorized immigrant community and call it freedom of speech. Although their shtick is to raise the temperature of their estimated 1.2 million listeners, John and Ken are keenly aware that their objectionable and incendiary language leads to more than discontent. Hate crimes against people of color in the United States are on the rise, as are the number of hate groups. Last year hate crimes against Latinos in California increased by nearly 50%. According to statistics from the Southern Poverty Law Center , hate groups are increasing at alarming rates in the country. A shocking sixty eight hate groups reside in California alone, many of which are in KFI AM’s listening area. John and Ken are equal opportunity haters. In 2005, John and Ken focused their anger against Jasmyne A. Cannick , an African American woman and former press secretary for then-chairman of the California Legislative Black Caucus, retired Assemblymember Mervyn Dymally. In 2009, John and Ken went after the Jewish Labor Committee Western Region’s union president, resulting in vandalism to his property. A bit more recently, John and Ken, as part of their ongoing rant against the California Dream Act, decided that I was the evil incarnate and to exercise me they gave out my personal cell number and direct office number for their listeners. The nasty, abusive, and racist calls flooded our phones and have not stopped since. The question we must ask ourselves as members of a multicultural society like Los Angeles is how much is enough. There is no denying there is discontent amongst the population for many reasons. It’s true the politicians in Sacramento and Washington often ignore our pleas for change. But is that reason enough to bypass common sense, respectful dialogue, and disagreement without being disagreeable. John and Ken care little for such banalities and instead go for the throat on a daily basis. John and Ken work for a radio station that must serve the needs of the community. In Los Angeles, more than 49% of the population is Latino, and most of immigrant descent. Although 70% of Latinos in the United States are U.S. born, the issue of immigration is dear to our hearts. John and Ken seem to miss the mark every time they attack immigrants. Their blinders keep them from offering context to their objections and instead of options they offer venom, hate, and more anxiety. I for one will not let John and Ken infect our local radio waves with their insensitivity, offhand attitude about immigrants, and their constant badgering of those they disagree with. If true change is what John and Ken look for, they will get it. We will work hard until they have been taken off the air. The cavavan moves on The gaping hole left by the federal government’s lack of courage to update our immigration system has become a chimera’s sanctuary in Alabama, Massachusetts, and California and now we must act to sedate it fast. As the most horrible nightmare on immigration chaos becomes ever more real, President Obama and the Democrat and Republican leaders remain disturbingly silent. There is no room for second-guessing, Mr. President. Congress and the White House must hold onto courage, heart, and mind to stop the types of ill-intentioned, myopic, inhumane laws such as SB1070 and SB56, and get back to work on smart, humane, and sensible updates to our nation’s broken and inconsistent immigration laws. In the meantime, as the old Arab proverb reads, though the dogs may bark, and some ocassionally bite, our caravan must keep going. There will be time for resting at the oasis of understanding, truth, and healing, just like in Alabama after the turbulent 60′s. In the meantime, our caravan must hold on tight because in addition to the rabid beasts, the road is quite bumpy out there.
