Retro Period Guide – Jewelry Design and Styles

April 19, 2012
Retro Period Guide – Jewelry Design and Styles

After the bold, sleek designs and decadence of the Art Deco period , jewelry took a decidedly softer turn. The Retro Period (1935 to 1960) was characterized by romantic motifs, the heavy use of gold, and “larger than life” sized jewelry. Retro Period jewelry aesthetic and style During the Retro Period, America was reeling from its involvement in World War II. Amid the turmoil overseas and the uncertainty at home, society turned to Hollywood for a romantic, “larger than life” escape from reality. Retro Period jewelry reflects this escapism: mimicking the abundance and glamour of Hollywood, designers crafted enchanting, oversized pieces that created a sense of romance and grace. Settings that featured pleats or drapes were also popular. Charm bracelets , watches and necklaces were particularly vogue during this jewelry period , as were oversized pins, clips and cocktail rings. The Duchess of Windsor’s bold style and fondness for cat motifs also propelled many of the period’s luxury jewelry trends. Popular metals, gems and stones during the Retro Period Gold is the hallmark of Retro Period jewelry. Although platinum was vogue during the Art Deco period, wartime restrictions made it largely unavailable for jewelry making during the Retro years. Thus, yellow gold became the metal of choice in the 1940s and 1950s. Yellow gold was often paired with rose or green alloys to create settings with a soft, romantic luster. Stones such as aquamarine , topaz, amethyst and citrine were extremely popular during the Retro Period, and like most jewelry settings from this period, were magnificent in size. The rectangular cut was one of the period’s most popular cuts, featuring prominently in cocktail rings with oversized stones. Although luxury designers still used rubies , sapphires and diamonds as accents, this period also saw the birth of costume jewelry using synthetic gems and wallet-friendly stones. Popular jewelry motifs during the Retro Period A Retro Period motif is unmistakable. Bows , fans, ribbons and ruffles reinforced this period’s femininity, while nature-inspired images such as flowers also began to grace everything from earrings and rings to brooches . Patriotic motifs were vogue, especially during the wartime periods, as were sculptural or 3-D designs that mimicked the movement of fabric. And although the trends varied from year to year, one thing remained constant: motifs during the Retro Period were almost always oversized, reflecting the grandness of Hollywood. Popular jewelry designers during the Retro Period Designers such as Cartier, Harry Winston and Van Cleef & Arpels shaped the luxury jewelry aesthetic during the Retro Period. With its nature-inspired designs and eye for romance, Van Cleef & Arpels ushered in the period’s emphasis on femininity and glamour more than any other design house. To this day, Van Cleef & Arpels is synonymous with 1940s and 1950s naturalism, an aesthetic just as vogue today as it was a half-century ago. Retro Period jewelry and Diamond & Estate Trust The Retro Period is defined by romance and glamour, a spirit captured meticulously by this 1950s-inspired custom ring in the Diamond & Estate Trust collection . Named the Aurora, this romantic ring features a soft 18K gold setting paired with lustrous yellow and pink colored diamonds. The center stone of this floral ring is a .72 carat GIA certified fancy intense pink diamond . A delicate row of white diamonds and 7 carats of perfectly matched natural fancy yellow pear-shaped diamonds complete this ring’s bouquet motif. This custom ring seamlessly blends the Retro Period’s fondness for oversized jewelry and love of whimsical, nature-inspired images. The Aurora is our tribute to the Van Cleef & Arpels designs that defined 1950s naturalism. Green Diamond Guide – Jewelry Trend 2012

Green Diamond Guide – Jewelry Trend 2012

Vibrant gems are so coveted this spring that Diamond & Estate Trust is devoting this entire week to gorgeous colored diamonds . Although we’ve all spotted celebrities wearing pink, yellow, and brown diamonds at recent Red Carpet events, there’s one colored diamond so rare that most people go their entire lives without seeing it: the green diamond. Here’s a quick primer on the legendary, elusive green diamond. A fancy vivid green diamond from the Diamond & Estate Trust collection How rare are green diamonds? If you’ve been reading our colored diamond blogs this week, you already know that all natural colored diamonds are extremely rare: Only one in 10,000 diamonds mined is a color other than white. But within the spectrum of colored diamonds , the green diamond is one of the rarest of them all (second only to the red diamond). It’s estimated that only about 10 green diamonds enter the marketplace each year, which explains why even A-List celebrities and the world’s nobility have a difficult time getting a hold of a green diamond. How do green diamonds get their color? Diamonds take on a green color when some type of natural radiation occurs while they’re forming within the Earth. Although all naturally-occurring green diamonds are extremely rare and, therefore, extremely valuable, the three most coveted green diamonds are fancy , fancy intense, and fancy vivid green. Whereas most colored diamonds are valued for a rich, deep color , green diamonds classified as fancy deep or fancy dark often lose their luster and resemble emeralds more than diamonds , making them a less desirable option. Because a green diamond is caused by natural radiation , it’s often difficult to tell whether a green diamond has been artificially heat-treated with radiation to achieve its color. Even more so than with other colored diamonds , it’s crucial to check the gem’s certification to determine that it was not artificially treated. What are some famous green diamonds? The Dresden Green The Dresden Green diamond is by far the most famous green diamond in the world. The 41 carat diamond is the largest known apple green diamond, and gets its name from the capitol of Saxony, Germany, where it has been housed for centuries. Although not as vibrantly green as the Dresden Green, the Orlov Diamond is another notable green diamond . Discovered in India, the 189.62 carat rose-cut Orlov Diamond is part of the Diamond Treasury of Russia. Its faint bluish-green tint makes it an extremely light – yet still extremely striking – example of a green diamond. Only a few green diamonds have ever been sold at auction. One green diamond, a 3.19 carat fancy green diamond ear pendant, was sold along with a yellow diamond ear pendant for $343,498 at a Christie’s auction in 2000. The largest green diamond ever sold at auction, a 2.52 carat vivid green diamond, fetched $3.08 million at a 2009 Sotheby’s auction in Geneva. What cuts work best for green diamonds? Like most colored diamonds , green diamonds look the most striking in cuts such as princess, radiant or round brilliant, all of which emphasize the depth and hue of a diamond. Green diamonds and Diamond & Estate Trust If you’re searching for the rarest, most exquisite gem the world has to offer, the green diamond is the perfect choice. No-Heat Ruby – 5.09 Carat Burma Ruby Ring

March 31, 2012
No-Heat Ruby – 5.09 Carat Burma Ruby Ring

Lately, we’ve spotted a host of A-List celebrities — including Scarlett Johansson, Nicole Richie , Natalie Portman and Jennifer Lopez — wearing ruby rings on the Red Carpet. There’s no denying that the ruby ring is surging back into vogue just in time for spring, and the ruby options on the jewelry market are endless. But take it from the gem experts at Diamond & Estate Trust : although it can be difficult to find, a no-heat ruby is by far the most exquisite choice. Rubies have long been considered royal gems, both for their mythical healing properties and central role in the jewelry of some of history’s most famous nobility . When you’re looking to buy a ruby ring , the most important quality to consider is whether the ruby has been treated. Most low-value rubies on the market have been artificially heat-treated to improve color, usually by removing blue or purple hues. These rubies are the ones to avoid, as their value and beauty are both low-quality. A no-heat ruby – one with a naturally coveted hue not achieved through a treatment process – is truly an exquisite gem with unparalleled natural beauty. Why purchase something artificial when the natural version is much more gorgeous, rare and coveted? This 5.09 carat Burma no-heat ruby ring from the Diamond & Estate Trust collection is the epitome of modern luxury. The rich, full red color and slight blue tint make the Burma ruby highly coveted throughout the world, and this stunning, no-heat 5.09 carat ruby boasts all those exceptional qualities. This massive oval Burma ruby has a natural color and clean facets that make it shine vividly under any light. The white diamonds that surround the ruby are as delicate and chic as this ring’s modern platinum setting. It’s a vivid, lively ring that is just as vogue today as when it was handcrafted. And because this Burma ruby is a certified no-heat gem, you can be sure that it is of the highest quality imaginable. With an exquisite collection of luxury gems such as diamonds , colored diamonds , no-heat rubies and no-heat sapphires , Diamond & Estate Trust is Southern California’s premier luxury jewelry buyer and seller. We hand-pick each gem and piece of vintage jewelry in our collection based on quality, design and natural beauty. Link: No-Heat Ruby – 5.09 Carat Burma Ruby Ring

March 30, 2012
Pigeon Blood Ruby Ring – 5.19 Carat Ring

Of all the gorgeous ruby hues in the world – the slight purples and strong purples, the slight oranges and strong oranges, and, of course, the spectrum of reds – there is undoubtedly one ruby color more valuable, beautiful and regal than the rest. The pigeon blood ruby, mined primarily in Myanmar’s Mogok’s Ho Mine, is the epitome of regal luxury. When you’re ready to make the ultimate jewelry statement, there’s nothing more exceptional than a pigeon blood ruby ring . (And if you need another indication, check out this list of recent A-Listers wearing ruby rings on the Red Carpet!) It’s not everyday the world comes across a pigeon blood ruby , which makes the 5.29 carat no-heat pigeon blood ruby in this ring the discovery of a lifetime. Rubies are by far the smallest of the precious gems , but this magnificent oval African ruby is a stunning exception to that rule. With a brilliant cut crown that emits sharp flashes of light and a luxurious, natural hue full of warmth and fire, this gem is the epitome of passion. And the two cushion modified cut diamonds that flank the pigeon blood ruby are equally stunning. At a perfectly matched 1.02 carats each, these diamonds have a coveted E color grade that contrasts beautifully with the ruby’s red hue. This 5.19 carat oval no-heat African ruby ring has a classic setting that will be vogue in any era. Its simple yet impactful design aesthetic makes this estate piece the perfect choice for a romantic engagement ring or another lasting symbol of passion.
