Occupy LA isn’t going anywhere; in fact, they’re planning ahead. As part of the protests, the Progressive Jewish Alliance will build a Sukkah on the grassy area in front of City Hall on October 16. Sukkot, in case you didn’t know, is a Jewish holiday that falls sometime in late September or early October each year (Jewish holidays take place in accordance with the Jewish calendar, not the Gregorian calendar). It lasts for seven days, and is intended to be a remembrance of the time that Jews lived in makeshift homes while crossing the desert out of Egypt. more › Link: Celebrating Sukkot the Occupy LA Way: In Front of City Hall

Hospital workers at the Keck Medical Center of USC began their day-long strike at 6am this morning, protesting what they say is a serious short-staffing problem, a one-year wage freeze, and exclusion from the university’s tuition and retirement benefits plan. Noemi Aguirre, a respiratory therapist, told ABC 7 Los Angeles that one of the protesters biggest concerns are the short-staffing problems at the hospital. “We have a lot of units where we are just plain short-staffed,” said Aguirre, “and they haven’t addressed those issues for us.” She also noted that NUHW has been trying to address this problem for the past 14 months. Watch Aguirre’s interview on ABC 7: According to a press release from the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), the hospital has received $250 million in donations over the last three years, as well as pledges that amount to an additional $150 million. The statement also notes that the federal government has scheduled a hearing for Keck Medical Center managers later in October to address unfair labor practices. Hospital spokesman Mitch Treem told CBS Los Angeles , “While we are unable to discuss the specifics of our proposal publicly, we can say that our NUHW employees are among the highest-paid in the region.” The NUHW union is made up of hospital workers like radiology and surgery technicians, housekeepers, and respiratory therapists. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday morning that recent comments Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) made about Democratic Senate rival Elizabeth Warren show he’s clueless about women. Pelosi made the suggestion during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.” During a Democratic primary debate Tuesday, Warren was asked about Brown’s decision to pose nude in a magazine during law school. Asked how she paid for college, Warren said she kept her clothes on. “Thank God,” Brown laughed during a radio interview about the comment afterward. He later said he was joking. Pelosi said the comment showed “how clueless” Brown is, and that he may not even realize how disrespectful some might find that joke. The California Democrat said she hopes Brown takes back the remark. Brown suggested he was “joking” when he made the comments in question. The Republican senator told reporters on Friday he was responding to a “wisecrack” from Warren about a decision he made to pay for school. Democrats hope to oust Brown from the Senate seat once held by Ted Kennedy. Read the original post: Pelosi: Scott Brown’s Remarks Show He’s Clueless About Women

Once part of the 42nd Assembly District under the representation of Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles), redistricting has placed Beverly Hills in the newly formed 50th Assembly District along with West Hollywood, Santa Monica and Malibu. Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, D-Marina del Rey, is the latest candidate to enter the race for the 50th Assembly District seat. The election takes place Nov. 6, 2012. Butler, a Democrat, currently represents the 53rd Assembly District. She won the race for that seat in November 2010, her first election. Her primary opponents appear to be Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom and Torie Osborn—a liberal activist backed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Having lived in Marina del Rey for 20 years, Butler said she currently represents 1.7 percent of the constituents in the new 50th Assembly District. “I am considered the incumbent in the 50th district,” she told The Argonaut . Regardless, Butler said she will move north to run in the new district. It is unclear exactly which city she has in mind. Be sure to follow Beverly Hills Patch on Twitter and “Like” us on Facebook .
